I don't know where people got the idea that gaara was fighting already in a dessert,the place is obviously a rocky area,with rock pillars everywhere,do those exist in a desser?,he made the sand himself with that first attack which was to test their response. The place they are fighting is a forest which obviously has sand already on the ground.
Gaara dosent need to see kamui to block it,his sand will intercept it . You people keep asking if gaara knows about kamui,what does kakashi know about gaara?,he has only seen gaara fight in the CE against lee and sasuke,he only knows about sand coffin and basic sand movement attacks. He dosent even know gaara can do a sand tsunami,sand hail,sand arms from his feet like against kimimaro which he did without making more sand.
If he goes underground,gaara will sense him,and he will be crushed instantly,and people kee saying about the mizukage's clone,hidan matched kakashi in speed didnt he?,and unless i am mistaken,the gaara that attacked the clone was a sand clone,while the real gaara gathered gold dust,that is probably why the mizukage was shocked that gaara caught it with his sand.
The sand that defends gaara moves quicker than the sand gaara uses to attack,whether it is a gourd sand or normal sand.
