Actually, the only reason why he was able to do that is because Ōnoki had lightened his sand to a great extent, beforehand; which, in turn, allowed Gaara to take advantage of the sandy field they were on and use the sand under Madara's feet.

Yes, he did do it. But he only managed to pull it off under certain circumstances; circumstances that would not necessarily have to be present every time an Uchiha uses Susano'o against him. In other words, it's improbable.

Yes, Gaara is a very good team-mate against a Susanoo user. His sand can preapre a quick defense against Susanoo, can block amaterasu, can pull out Susanoo user in certain situations and send is also a quick offensive method.

gaara had gone through 3 kage,lightening the sand just helped him conserve chakra as it would require less effort to use it. Using sand under someone's feet is something he has been doing since part 1.
