Well do remember sasukes early sasunoo was getting it's a** kicked by 4th raikage but gaaras sand was think enough to stop raikages attack and sasukes amatinatsu *spelling I mean black flames*

That was the weakest version of Susanoo. It was barely even bones. Sasuke's Susanoo now is much much stronger and Itachi's is impenetrable.

3rd raikages is good but even his can be beaten. The only way to stop Itachi's Susanoo is to wait for him to run out of chakra but because he his Susanoo has those Magatama attacks plus the Totsuage sword and the Yata mirror that is kind of hard to do.

EDIT: Gaara's sand requires chakra to use guys. It doesn't automatically protect him, he pumps chakra into it. It automatically protected him in part 1 but even then it used chakra. Things don't just magically move on their own, everything uses chakra. But ever since he lost Shukaku he controls the sand so I guess it is faster but it doesn't automatically protect him, he does that.
