Ok so basically:

Gaara:
At the start Gaara was an evil, psuedomaniac with a hellish bloodlust and a desire to kill everything, he had nobody and didnt belong anywhere, + neglected from relationships and society.
His family hated and feared him and this led him to becoming demon like and lead to the downfall of himself as an individual.

Over time, Naruto helped Gaara realise the errors in his ways, and realise a greater purpose than merely killing. This helped Gaara gain a sense of belonging and a creator meaning of life - and lead him to become a dutiful and kind hearted Kazekage whom everyone loved and respected.

Sasuke
In contrast,
Sasuke Started off as the 'prize' of the leaf - the only remaining uchiha and a kind hearted - and a little bit arrogent - character - he was pure hearted before the massacre of his clan - and even after that - seeking revenge - he was still a kind hearted shinobi and cared for his comrades.

After seeking too much power for revenge - Sasuke became overwhelmed with darkness and fell to Orochimaru who he then overtook. He became an 'avenger' closing his eyes totally to the light. Due to circumstances he then seeks revenge on the leaf - and will most likely find things to be angry at as most people who realise their vengeance only find more darkness and seek more revenge - there is nothing at the end of a path of vengeance.

Example:
This is examplified during the Kage summit at which Gaara attempts to convince Sasuke to open his eyes to the light again just as he did - and bring him back to what he once was.

In summary

Part 1:

Evil ---------------------------------------------------- Good
Gaara -------------------Naruto-----------------------Sasuke

Shippuden:

Evil ----------------------------------------------------Good
Sasuke ------------------Naruto-----------------------Gaara

Naruto acts as the Catalyst for each Transition

Ultimately their interelationship demonstrates the power of a place to 'belong' and that Naruto - as the center of conflict - could have gone to either good or bad.

Yeah, this idea has been explored in the story itself, but not a bad job of fleshing it out.

Sasuke pissed me off bigtime when at the Kage summit he claimed "my hatred is even greater than yours was now." I don't believe that for a second, Sasuke is just high as **** on himself. what a douche.
.
That has nothing to do with this thread though, good job with this explaination. Naruto would like to save everyone if he could, but he doesnt think things through and in the end he could be creating just as many monsters as he saves.

agreed, Sasuke just over-exhadurates a lot of the things that happened to him - he really handles things pretty poorly
