I have a few questions relating to Gaara's ultimate defense and genjutsu.
  • Given that Gaara's sand automatically shields him from all attacks would it automatically block Gaara's vision if he was about to get hit with a visual genjutsu?
  • If not then wouldn't genjutsu (excluding frog song and Tsukiyomi) still be useless since the opponent still has to physically hit/ kill Gaara, and the sand will protect him, whether genjutsu'ed or not?

If #1 is true that I really doubt then it only takes someone fast enough that the sand won't keep up with the attacks, for example J-man in sage mode is too fast for the sand to keep up with his attacks.

But in the war it was explained that it was never the 1-tails doing it, it was his mother. The sand shield comes from his mother, not the power he got from 1-tail.

Makes sense, but it might have to do with his consciousness. I'm not sure.

I'll just quote myself from another thread regarding the same question.

Well, it is said that his mom's spirit is the one controlling it.

I think (don't say it has to be like this) that the sand percepts the intention to attack Gaara so that's why it reacts. Why do I say it? Because even if the attack comes from the back, the sand still reacts and protects him. And Gaara doesn't have eyes in the back. (Excluding his 3rd eye technique)
I am assuming this given his battle with Rock Lee in part. 1.

So even if you put Gaara into a genjutsu, the sand will still protect him, therefore his defense will still work.
