There's been a lot of discussion about how Dragon Ball Super has turned Gohan, the first saiyan to ever go ssj2; one of DBZ's most fiercest warriors and a huge fan favorite, into a desk jockey slash family man who has zero interests in fighting. While some fans still have hope that Gohan will eventually revert back to his old ways of DBZ, I've come to terms with his current status and accepted that Gohan may never return to his formerself. This has turned my attention to Goten and Trunks, the last two 2nd generation Saiyans. I wanted to take the time and discuss their current roles in dragon ball super and their possible roles in the future of the series.

Goten
Unlike Gohan, Goten was able to turn SSJ1 at an early age with absolutely no training, and with no effort at that. But outside of Metamoran Fusion with Trunks, Goten hasn't seen much character development in terms of combat since dragon ball Z. Chichi is constantly forcing Goten to study, pushing him down the path of a scholar like she did with Gohan; constantly pulling him out of fights, and preventing him training with his father. At the current rate that Goten is going his going to share a similar future to Gohan, which is off the battle field, and in a house with a wife and kids.
Now, there is always a possibility of them doing a sort of time skip in DBS and put Goten in a doomsday situation like Gohan was during the Cell saga, where all capable fighters had to train in order to save the planet. If something like that happens, I could see Goten undergo training and hitting SSJ2 at the max.

Trunks
Like Goten, Kid Trunks was always able to go SSJ1 with no effort and training, but again outside of Fusion with Goten, Trunks has gotten 0 character development. In DBS, not much is going on for Trunks aside from him being homeschooled. Unlike Goten, Trunks' father is the influential parent in his life. I don't think Vegeta is going to allow Trunks become weak as DBS progresses. I believe he's gonna keep trunks up to date with his training whenever he makes time, so within DBS, Trunks will be able to go SSJ2.
If a timeskip happens and trunks is placed in a doomsday situation, I could see Trunks potentially being the first person aside from Goku to unlock SSJ3.

Gotenks
In terms of current DBS, Gotenks is just as fodder as the rest of the Z warriors. Ever since gods were introduced in the series, all basic forms of Super Saiyan have become irrelevant. Now if Goten continues down the route of a scholar while trunks continues to keep up with his training, I could see their Metamoran fusion becoming unusable because of their unbalanced power levels, but I doubt the writers of DBS would do something like that.
If a time skip were to happen, and both Goten and Trunks kept up with their training, with the help of Whis, I could see Gotenks be able to go SSJ blue.
But anyway, those are my thoughts on Goten and Trunks future. Tell me what you guys think?
