The guys they were protecting were really protecting them. Tiny flying man stops a meteor, woman cut in half by a tree survives it in one piece. Madara and Hashirama fought again but as zombies. Giant monsters fighting each other. The masked man was Obito Uchiha who did all this because his crush died.
It makes for one interesting chapter in the history books.
