So this is a open question. We all have seen fujitora by now, and in case you haven't here is a picture of him:

Notice that the scar covers and includes both of his eyes.

We can guess from the feats we've seen and because of his rank that he is a strong fighter and a formidable opponent.

My question is this, what is the cause of fujitora's blindness?

it seems to me that it was the injury to his face that caused his blindness. This would imply that he was a strong fighter who lost his eyesight, and then became an even bigger badass by still fighting after losing his eyesight. (like irako seigen in shigurui

^ Its a pretty graphic series, but still a good story^

The other options are, in decreasing order of likelihood imo that

- he was born blind, and became a blind swordsman.

- he was not a fighter, but was injured and blinded, then became a swordsman.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Now that i consider it some more, it is possible that he bears a grudge against the shichibukai because he was injured by one and blinded or something like that ... maybe mihawk??

His injury seems more like the one Luffy has on his chest. It doesn't seem like an ordinary cut, like Garp's or Zoro's. I don't think a swordsman did this to his face, tough I do believe he lost his sight from this wound.

He probably lost his fight in a battle. I also think he was defeated by someone who is now a Shichibukai, or who became a Shichibukai earlier in his life, which is the reason why he wants to get rid of the third power, the Shichibukai system. We can only guess.

Hmm ,its possible but as someone pointed out and i noticed it too since todays ep also came out ,it looks like luffys injury normally(or mostly) swords have accuracy in cutting cleanly ,it does not seems like a swords cut ,but its highly possible that some schibukai did this or maybe if mihawk didnt had his sword(or something like that(but he mostly has it)) ,yeah i dont know :(

I doubt it. Honestly if Mihawk and Fujitora did battle in the past Mihawk would have scars as well or at least some disfigurement since if Mihawk is actually stronger than Fujitora it's not by much.

I think Fujitora just purely dislikes pirates and thinks working with them is a disgrace and with his blindness I can't really make an assumption yet since we need more info on Fujitora.

Well since he is based off 'the blind swordsman' Zatoichi, I think it's just his thing to be blind. I don't think there will be an explanation for it. He will be blind because of reasons unknown to us, and Oda gave him a cool scar.

Notice the gambling, the figure of speech and the way of walking. I think Toei did a good way of animating that. and Oda of course for his research.

Either Mihawk,Doflamingo or the new unnamed Shichibukai cut his eyes a few years ago (4 or 5), and since then he's wanted to become a Marine to have a better chance of depleting the system.

That wouldn't even make sense. He would target specifically Mihawk if that was the case, not dismantle the entire Shichibukai system just for one persons action. Fujitora's reason for removing the Shichibukai system is because of how broken it is, not cause he wants to avenge the single person who "caused" his scar.

Fuji seems like the guy that would blind himself so he wouldnt have to see the injustice of this world... Thats probably not it, but it would be badass.

I think he got it after he became a swordsman. I don't think it's far fetched that he challenged Mihawk at some point and got crushed. Then again that scar looks similar to the one Luffy has as someone already stated.

I think he's just supposed to represent blind justice. He dislikes the Shichibukai because their status gives them a pass for the crimes they've committed, which goes against what he represents.

Those are not sword scars, Oda draws sword scars as thin straight lines with stitches in regular intervals. Examples Zoro's chest and ankle scars and Genzo

Luffy's and Aokiji's scars are burns, they're more like patches of scar tissue from an impact with a random border and darker colored skin.

Fujitora's scars are more like a combination of above, they're wrinkly wide lines of discolored skin.

There is no way this is the work of a swordsman unless he was drunk.

I think Oda won't give us the reason of the scarring, he is blind because the character he was based off was blind, the scars just were Oda's touch to the character.

I assume you mentioned Doflamingo because you think he used a sneak attack on Fujitora? Cause, he's not anywhere strong enough to ever hope to do something like that to an Admiral. Fujitora seems to be older than the original trio Admirals so he's probably been in his prime for a decade or two.

That wouldn't even make sense. He would target specifically Mihawk if that was the case, not dismantle the entire Shichibukai system just for one persons action. Is an Admiral allowed to target an ally of the WG for something that happened in the past? Otherwise more or less agree with you.

I think either he was one of the people Mihawk defeated on his journey to becoming the strongest swordsman or pirate legends such as Rayleigh/Shiki could have done it since he probably was active and strong enough to put up a fight against those people in the past.
