What is everyone's thoughts on this law?

In my opinion, it sets a dangerous precedent in France. Any time a law singles out a specific group of people its not a good thing. The reasoning behind the law was that it undermined gender equality in France, which is understandable. But, I don't think it was the French government's place to force this on Muslims. It was an issue that should have been dealt with within the Muslim community, not through legal action.

"French President Nicolas Sarkozy set the wheels in motion for the ban nearly two years ago, saying the veils imprison women and contradict this secular nation's values of dignity and equality."

I kinda agree with this. I wish my country would do the same.

Okay, I quite don't agree with this as I view this law more as a complete violation of Islam's Belief.
On the second hand, I understand their views. This subject is a bit too tacky as the burqa/niqab is an important culture in Islam despite being not obligatory and asking them to stop wearing it in public is almost outrageous.

In a way, they are promoting gender equality by sacrificing religious and ethnic believes.

I hope no one will blow up anything for this. Nice move France D:
LOL, seriously? Haha, but no, i don't think any country other than France has this law. Its kinda stupid, cuz not all muslim women wear the hijaab, and apart from a few places in the world many do so by choice. Anyway, this move is bs. Its the same as what the saudi's do, who force women to wear niqaab/hijaab whenever they leave the house. Governments should have NO say in what people chose to wear/not to wear in public as in my opinion both the Saudi's and the French are being discriminatory in their own way.

Well, that veil is a part of their religion.

well it depends really on the way the burqa is used.........
i dont know the reason why they wear it but to visit there mosque and places it is ok
banning it in the work place and other public places i think will be a good move.

Well, the niqab/hijab/burqa isn't obligatory in Islam but it's kinda good respect of it that they are worn; not really because government force it.
Th Holy Prophet Muhammad said in the Quran that it is a form of respect to Islam and respect of their own body. The Prophet never decreed this as an law but everything that the Prophet said is meaningful in every Muslim's eyes and is performed out of good will to him...That's a longs story in fact, so I won't go much into detail.

Moreover though, that's why the burqa/hijab is obligatory in the Mecca (the house of the Prophet). As much as what I know, the hijab/burqa should be worn after you went to Mecca always by women (same as beard for men). So coming back to what I said, this ban promotes gender equality by sacrificing beliefs...

Comin' back to your "Elvis religion", Elvis was never a God, no matter how much he is a celebrity or loved. However, I understand your point.
But see it this way - tomorrow, there's a ban on on another clothes and they might say that it promotes vulgarity and is against a nation's pride and dignity. So where's the logic and freedom of speech in these law?

All-in all, this ban law has more drawbacks for me and is based on wrong principles. I quite of don't understand the part "imprison women"

I don't think anyone has any right to interefere with anyone's beliefs. Let people follow their religion peacefully, and they'll let you follow yours too.
No one should get to decide what anyone has to wear. It's wrong of the Saudis force people to wear veils and it's wrong of France to stop people from wearing them. Besides, Islam is like the second bigest religion in France. Obviously, there will be trouble if you try to interefere with anyone's believes.
Why can't people just live and let live?

Mmm...My opinion is that women shouldn't be forced to wear the nikab, but they should neither be forbidden/banned from wearing it.

I personally disagree with this law myself. In Islam wearing a burqa is not a must thing it is just a thing girls wear to cover themselves that way they have more respect in them selves and avoid attention from guys who rather see girls in little tight or revealing cloths. It's totally up to the girl to wear it or not but this law is forcing them to remove it which is not fair to the ones who want to keep it on. The burqa doesn't effect anyone or anything the girls who don't like wearing it have the rights to remove it. Their are those parents that may force the girls in their family to be wearing this but in that matter you can't blame Islam but blame the parents.

In this case let the Muslim community decide this for them selves or better yet let the females decide as it is their right to wear it or not.

But gender equality should always be a higher priority then religion.
dont get me wrong, i dont agree with a law that outlaws the Islamic veils, but the way you say it makes me think you putting something personal as religion before gender equality and that's just wrong.
you also said it is not something that is forced upon woman by Islam itself but woman in strict Islamic nations will have problems if they dont wear one.
and that's where i have problems with, like i said in my post in the religion section, "it's the "outdated" rules of religion that hold the progression of humans in general back"
i have nothing against people who believe in Islam Christianity, Buddha or the big joujoubi op the mountain, but when a certain group of people start to interpret there scriptures and use them to enforce certain laws on other believers i get very PISSED, because it is not their right to tell others how to interpret and follow their religion. same with any country who tries to outlaw certain aspects of religion.

Simply stated;

“If women want to walk around half-naked I don’t object to them doing so. If they want to wear tight jeans where you can see their underwear or walk around with their breasts hanging out, I don’t give a damn. But if they are allowed to do that, why should I not be allowed to cover up?”

A simple, yet perfect answer imo. I second this.
If I'm not mistaking, there is a law in Belgium that says that women can't wear a veil/niqab/burqa (spelling) when they work in one of the federal departements... Not only Islamic women, but christian women as well.

I can understand, to some limit, why others think this restricts equality between different genders and cultures though, but shouldn't christian crosses, or jewish caps (I don't know the word for this lol) be prohibited as well then? If we're talking about cultural and personal equality as a person.
