Fred Phelps the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church(WBC) died on March 18. For those of you who don't know the WBC was a group of Christian extremists who would protest dead soldiers funerals saying that they deserved death, and God hates them, and homosexuality is the reason that they're dead (even if the soldier wasn't gay), and they do this while the funeral is in service not even 50ft away from where it happens, on loud speakers so the whole family whose mourning can hear. They blame all the disasters in the world (natural, or not) on homosexuality. They claim they pray for the deaths of victims of floods, tornados, typhoons, etc. They claim children born with aids deserved it, that that's Gods way of punishing them.

I realize that a lot of times homophobes are in fact gay themselves. I don't know if this deep rooted hate Fred Phelps displayed was really just a vice to deal with his internal struggles of suppressing his homosexuality, or not.

I really don't understand why people who want to preach the word of God, and bring in followers do it in such a way that it turns people away from Christianity. They're just pushing people away from something they consider righteous. They believe that every word in the bible should be taken literal, and has no foul. There are many contradictions in the Bible (this may be breaking news to some of you), such as slavery, murder, and torture being acceptable.

To get to my point now is that people are thinking about protesting Fred Phelps' funeral. To be honest I'm torn between wether, or not this is acceptable. I realize it's a mistake tho fight hatred with hatred, but theirs a part of me who thinks it would show his family (most of which are in the church) how it feels to pour salt on the wound. In a way believe that this also lowers oneself to their level. In a way it seems like they like the attention, and controversy. I think that in a way it would eat them up more inside if nobody protested at the funeral because, this is what they expected, and wanted everyone to do. It would be proving them wrong when that think everything that say and do is right. There's also the route of going to the funeral and not protesting but, holding up signs saying things like "Fred Phelps is in my prayers", or "We forgive Fred and the Westboro Baptist Church", and basically trolling them in the nicest way possible. Basically "killing them with kindness" as my mom always said.

I know this is a long read but, I respect a lot of people's opinions on the base and I'd like to get your thoughts on the subject, since I feel it's wrong for people to hate homosexuality, and homosexual's. My uncles gay and he's got a heart of gold. I could never believe in a God that condemns him for being the person that he was born to be.

I don't think there should be protests at his funeral. Why? there could be family members there who had NO part in his ambitions, and some who probably disagreed. The man is dead, so a protest wouldn't effect him, but some of his family who is there and who had nothing to do with WBC would be the ones who suffer from it. I just say leave it alone.

I know he's dead, in my opinion, it's better off that way. Sadly his ambitions didn't die with him.

A part of me agrees with you. Though his whole family is, or was a member of WBC since he was the founder. He had brainwashed his children from a young age so they didn't know any better. I just think they in some way, shape, more form need to see how it feels to be fu(ked with while mourning. They need some sort of eye opener. I just wish there was something that could put them in all those families shoes of those families of the soldiers who had children, wife, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters etc in mourning while they were 50ft away screaming at them "he deserved this, and he's in hell now". With those young children's not understanding why their father, or even mother was being put down like that. It's just so evil. I don't even understand what they're accomplishing by doing this. They say they're trying to turn people on to god by doing it, but it's really just turning them away really. They're a family of lawyers, and I think they're are really just trying to get their name out there. Maybe this is all fueled by money, and politics. They also protest children's funerals. I believe they protested the children's funerals that were victims in the Sandie Hook shootings if I'm not mistaken.

This isn't about Christianity so much as it is about morality.

Protesting at his funeral would solve nothing. It would only serve to bring negitivity, and ill feelings which is what he was hated for. Contrary to popular belife and saying fighting fire with fire is illogical and ignorant.

.....kinda like that red neck who attempted to get toilet paper out of they're tree by lighting the toilet paper on fire. You can guess how that turns out.

Nothing to debate Westboro has already stated there won't be a funeral as they consider it to be worshiping the dead.

Don't worry though. I will defeat him and the rest of Hell's forces with my Golden PSP. I'm going full Keanu on their azz..

I don't care that he's dead, eventhough I feel his death couldn't have come soon enough.

But I'm against picketing his funeral out of vengeance, it's hypocracy in it's purest form.
If people want to do it, I'd say; Have at it, Hoss! But that doesn't mean you're ANY better than them.

I am glad his dead whilst I would find it hilarious if there were protests at his funeral I so not think it would be the right thing to do. Let it be.
