I bought Storm 2 last year, and overall I enjoyed it. There were still flaws in the story mode, like the plot rewrites and the fact the animators went down the easy road for cutscenes, and it was a bit too short. It was in no way worth the original price when it came out in 2010.

But I haven't played Generations yet (I had to make a choice between that or Far Cry 3, ended up with zero regrets), so Storm 3 is definitely going to be a lot more interesting since there are tons of 'new' characters. The animation looks better too, but the plot rewrites are still there and there some disappointing reveals (No edo kages, no swordsmen etc.)

So... my decision on whether to get Storm 3 or not mostly rests on the online battles. The Ranked matches in Storm 2 were horrible. The endless use of the substitution technique made close combat/combo's pretty much useless, so a lot of matches were just about keeping distance, guarding and spamming ninjutsu/shurikens.

The question is, how much of an improvement was the Generation's battle system compared to the previous one... And is there more variation in the way people fight?

I'd say go for Storm 3! It will have more characters than generations as well as a campaign.

The substitution Jutsu works as a set limit that rechargeable slowly after you stop using it for a time. (Can basically use it 4 times if used quickly together....then have to wait for it to recharge) so combos/close range Jutsu are very usable!

The only difference character wise between Generations and Storm 3 will be that 3 has far more characters (though less pre-time skip characters), and a couple of new features I believe (substitution combos where you and a teammate do a double team combo), ring outs, and overall improved look I think!

Allow me to bring you some insight into this:

Story:
First, let me say, I dont see how you could say Storm 2's story was short. Unless you were skipping cutscenes and dialogue moments to try and get through it, that campaign should have lasted at least 9 hours. Now on to my main point. The story mode in Storm 3, from what I can gather (if you want more accurate responses, try asking again when the game is released and people have played it) the story mode has improved GREATLY from Storm 2. If you enjoyed Storm 2's story mode, but weren't completely impressed, I'd say this would be the one to impress you. The visuals are far superior to the 2nd, the animations are far more cinematic, and the boss battles are crazy over the top. I cant speak on how much the cutscenes/dialogue moments have improved as it hasnt been released yet, but I can expect them to have been improved based off of what we've seen thus far. As for lack of certain characters you mentioned, it doesnt look like you can play as them, but they are there in the story mode as boss battles, so take that as you will. I also (regrettably I accidentally spoiled a moment of it) know where the game ends, or rather what the last boss battle is, and I'll tell you if you dont know, its by far CC2's most ambitious boss fight in a Naruto game yet. Not to mention that CC2 stated the story mode should take anywhere from 15-30 hours to complete, depending on if you do side missions. I would recommend buying Storm 3 for the story experience alone.

Fighting mechanics:
You asked if the fighting mechanics were better than Storm 2, and how Generations was. Generations was built specifically to improve the mechanics, and nothing more. The fighting system in Generations had its flaws yes, but it was a better system by far than in Storm 2. The 2 biggest things in Generations that changed were that you could cancel combos mid-combo (including jutsu) and that the substitution jutsu used its own chakra bar (meaning you had a limited amount of substitutes). The Substitutes were also vastly easier to use as an entire button was dedicated to them, almost like it was a reset button instead of a dodge. Now as for Storm 3, unfortunately, some mechanics from Generations were removed, due to people complaining like they always do to change. I've played the demo for Storm 3, so I can say the fighting system has changed from Storm 2, also for the better. Some obvious things that they changed was that some characters can awaken right from the start by simply moving the D-pad (xbox controller, not sure about ps3). There are obvious backlash responses to this, but there are good things that come from it too. It relies more on strategy, as when you awaken instantly your chakra depletes RAPIDLY, meaning you probably only have time for 1-2 juts before your time is up. Also when your instant awakening is gone your character is weaker, defense wise and attack wise. The fighting itself is also smoother. Thats about all I can say on the fighting mechanics, there have been information that can gathered from the game convention demos and the leaked gameplay of the game, such as new features for supports and the arena's themselves, but you'd just have to play it yourself to grasp how much better the mechanics are.

Now in my opinion, the story mode mixed with tha vast change of gameplay is well worth the price of the game. There are also new game modes to be played, as well as online experience (online battles now can be played with random conditions, such as sudden death matches. Theres a lot more, but I dont know what they are).

That's good news. So the battles will be a lot more interesting... well, counting out all the people who'll main Madara of course xD

Wow, nice description. Thanks for taking the time to write this.

The game felt short, because I finished the main storyline within 20 hours (so in a week), minus all the sidemissions of course. Compared to other games that I've played, which offered over 40/50 hours of gameplay for a lower price, it's kinda short. Plus, it's not like the storyline is new. It's a game based on the anime, which is based on the manga.

60 dollars/46 euros is a lot of money, but if the battle system used in Generations and Storm 3 have caused players to use more combo's, combined with shurikens/ninjutsu/support (instead of the opposite) then it's going to be worth it.

Story move is safe, because I've seen parts of the lass boss battles (and the ending *facepalm*) and they look amazing.
