It's called foreshadowing. There were more than enough hints that Obito was Tobi, especially after he was introduced so soon after the Kakashi flashbacks and kept popping up. Biggest hint was when he locked eyes with Kakashi and Kakashi's brief reaction. The hints were just enough to plant the seeds, but obvious if you paid attention.

Tobi's Hairstyle and MS teleportation were hints enough to convey that Tobi was Obito and not Madara....
Anyways I first saw Naruto in Nov 2012.... So It wasn't a suspense for me.... Had just heard of the show 6 - 8 years ago....
