Footballing legend and one of the greatest club footballer Alfredo Di Stéfano died at the age of 88, he suffered a heart attack on saturday and was in an induced coma. This was his second heart attack.
You must have heard Real Madrid fans bragging about the La Decima, without him it wouldn't have been possible, from 1956-1960, he helped Real Madrid win 5 European cups in succession along with his teammate Francisco Gento.
The argentine helped them dominate the European cups in 1950 and in total scored 300+ goals for them, which at that time was a record. He is overall 5th in the tally of goalscorers in spanish club football.
In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Spain by the Royal Spanish Football Federation as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. He was named by Pelé as one of the "top 125 greatest living footballers" in March 2004 (in September 2009, he said Di Stéfano was the best Argentinian player "ever").Di Stéfano was voted fourth, behind Pelé, Diego Maradona, and Johan Cruyff, in a vote organized by the French weekly magazine France Football consulting their former Ballon d'Or winners to elect the Football Player of the Century.
Let me put his European victories in perspective, he is one of the few footballers ever to win Champions league/European cup 5 times and amongst them probably the most influential and prolific player.
In modern times Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who are considered few of the best footballers have won it 2(1 Man U + 1 Real madrid) and 3 times(for barcelona).
RIP Don Alfredo
His death is a great loss for Real Madrid fans and even for non-madrid fans like me who are footballing enthusiasts.
