Seeing a thread about Toonami got me thinking about the first cartoons/anime I watched. I'm curious to see what shows everybody first watched. Cartoons and Anime for me started with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
I remember when Cartoon Network started it never played anime. It only aired Looney Tunes and a few other cartoons like Scooby Doo, Johnny Quest, Captain Planet, and Rocky and Bullwinkle. At this time Nickelodeon was playing shows like Rocko's modern life, Real Monsters, All That, and Ren and Stimpy. I was in elementary school back then. Back then right before classes started they showed Mr. Rodgers on the class televisions. It was also around this time that the N64 console came out.

Then sometime in my middle school years they added Toonami to Cartoon Network in a 1-2 hour time slot in the afternoon. I think the first shows that aired were Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing, and Yu Yu Hakusho. I remember when they aired Draonball Z they cut the episodes off at the Ginyu saga and ran reruns for a long time. I was pissed when I came home one day looking forward to seeing Goku fight Jeice and Burter, and the first episode of DBZ was on. I think around this time they also added some others shows such as Johnny Bravo, Swat Cats, and a host of others to Cartoon Network. Nickelodeon was playing shows like Cat Dog, Two Angry Beavers, and Hey Arnold. It wasn't until I was in High School that Toonami moved to the night time. It started with shows like Inyuasha, Evangelion, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop. Sometime later they added Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, and Death Note. Eventually this slot would be become the Adult Swim we know today.
It's funny because now I watch everything online except sports, and can't remember the last time I watched Toonami. I never thought I would stop watching the network that brought me Power Rangers in the morning in elementary school, and Pokemon in the morning during middle school. I used to watch both of these shows during breakfast before heading to the bus stop. Thinking back I guess in middle school Pokemon was all the rage. The show had just come out and everybody was collecting the trading cards. Such nostalgia.
As far as anime my first experience was Pokemon and then Dragonball Z. Back then people didn't read manga, or at least people I knew didn't. Naruto started airing on TV right when I started college. It was at this time that I started to sporadically read manga. When I started graduate school 4 years later I started to look for more Anime to watch and manga to read. That's when I picked up shows like Code Geaus and Steins Gates among others. Interestingly enough I joined NB in the Fall of 2012 to post a prediction for an upcoming chapter in the manga. I had no intention at the time of doing anything else on the site. I'm glad I joined when I did as I had no way of knowing I would become more active on the site later.
Anyway, I'm interested to hear about the first cartoon and anime shows people watched. By the way the 1990's were the golden age of cartoons, and the cartoons today don't even hold a candle to them. I'm not sure whether anime has gotten better or worse since I was a child. I say this because their are a host of current anime shows I like as much as past ones.
