Name: Portgas D. Ace|ポートガス・D・エース Nickname: Fire Fist Ace Gender: Male Age:20 Clan:Uchiha |
Looks:Although they were not blood related, Ace looks remarkably like his foster brother, Luffy. However, Ace is more serious looking than Luffy's lighthearted appearance, and is also slightly taller and more muscular. He also sports rather childish freckles (inherited from his mother), and tended to make an incredulous facial expression by raising his left eyebrow. Interestingly, his facial features were almost akin to his biological father Gol D. Roger in his youth without his mustache. Ace's tattoos are among his most remarkable, trademark features. He has a tattoo on his back of the Whitebeard symbol — purple bones formed in a cross behind a purple skull with a white mustache — that he describes as his pride and joy. Ace has another tattoo on his upper left bicep that spells "ASCE" vertically. The "S" crossed out is a tribute to Sabo as that's his jolly roger. Ace wore an open-front shirt until he received Whitebeard's tattoo - afterwards, he stopped wearing anything over his upper body except when in winter. He wears black boots, black knee-length shorts with an eyelet-studded orange belt, and a blue pouch belted around his left leg. He also wears a short second belt with a large red "A" on the silver buckle over his right hip, but leaves it unfastened and threads the free end along the back of his shorts. A dagger in a green sheath hangs at his left hip. He wears a red beaded necklace and an orange hat with two blue smileys, one frowning and one smiling, and a string of red beads sitting above the rim. Two long orange side straps hung down sides of his hat and meet at a large medallion of a bull's skull with orange tassels. As a child, Ace is shown to have often worn t-shirts with two-kanji phrases on the front (such as "innocence" and "violence"). On some occasions they are linked to the scene in which they were worn, like "independence" when the three brothers built their own tree house to live in. He often wore knee-length shorts and a black elbow guard on his left arm. Ace was always seen wearing dark brown, flat, slipper-like shoes, and in the winter, he wore a green cardigan over his normal clothes. |

Personality:Ace was much more intelligent, polite, and generally more bearable than Luffy, which prompted the Straw Hats to question whether he was truly related to their leader. While several people who knew Gol D. Roger noted Luffy is quite similar to the late Pirate King, Whitebeard himself claimed that Ace's personality was not at all like his father's. It seems that among the very few things the brothers shared was their recklessness as ninjas (and their near-bottomless stomachs). In addition, Ace liked to party as much as his brother does. When he boarded Buggy's ship, he was drawn by the smell of food and decided to enjoy himself while he was there. Ace could be a bit vulgar though as he once used a woman's skirt to wipe his face while he was dining at Spice Bean in Suna. Ace has extreme narcolepsy when not in battle. He tends to fall asleep at the oddest times, whether it be in the middle of eating or in the middle of a conversation, leaving those around him to wonder if he was dead. He also has a dine-and-dash habitual routine wherever he went, which goes back his childhood with Sabo and Luffy. His "politeness" is due to Makino's teaching after Ace asked her how to introduce himself to Shanks (being his brother's savior). Before that, Ace was rather cold and rude to anyone he was not familiar with. As the son of Roger, he lived in his shadow and is to date the first D. depicted to truly question his own right to exist, while displaying the fewest commonly seen D. related traits. Ace seemed to have lifelong problems dealing with his parentage, even after denouncing Gol D. Roger and accepting Whitebeard as his only father. This was in direct contrast to Luffy, who accepted his father's identity immediately upon learning it and did not seem to care when he was told how dangerous of a man he was. However, Luffy did not grow up with knowledge or identity (or even existence) of his father. Ace believed that it was natural if he were to really die as nobody in the world wanted the son of the devil (Roger) to live. Ace commented that he had never sought fame or fortune - all he had wants is the answer to his lifelong question of whether or not he should have been born, as this was the only thing preventing him from dying with no regrets as he and Luffy had vowed to do so and the fact he had a younger brother to look out for. Ace had a tendency to never back down from a fight, saying that he would never run once facing an enemy. Because of this, some people believed that Ace had a death wish, but in truth he wanted to prevent people he cared for from getting hurt. Dadan stated that he inherited this tendency from his father, Gol D. Roger, despite loathing him. Ace was also easily provoked by and became violent towards anyone who insulted or harmed people close to him. In one of Garp's conversations with Curly Dadan, this was revealed to be a trait of Roger as well. During his childhood, Ace had a tendency to severely injure anyone who insulted Roger, though he himself disliked his biological father. After hearing about Sabo's presumed death at the hands of a ninja, Ace quickly became bent on killing the shinobi and Dadan had to pin Ace down and tie him to a tree to stop him. Ace is very protective of his younger brother Luffy. This has caused him to, at times, hunt down shinobi he was heard of attempting to attack Luffy and kill them. |

History: CHILDHOOD Long before Ace was born into the Uchiha clan, his father, an Uchiha who went by the name of Gol D. Roger took the shinobi world by storm, becoming known as the "Pirate King" due to his brutality. At one point in Roger's past, he met a young woman by the name of Rouge. Immediately smitten with each other, they become lovers. Shortly before the Uchiha massacre, they had both left Konoha. Roger himself became a rogue and wanted criminal, on par with that of Akatsuki. Travelling around the world, Roger collected a group of ninja and made the Roger Squad, and thus, a small tradition was formed among some ninja in small numbers: to form "squads" that were simply a group of unrelated ninja. At some point, Roger contracted a terminal illness and Rouge became pregnant with Ace. Roger turned himself into the authorities of the Ninja World and was sentenced to execution. Labelled a Devil, it was ordered that anyone within his lineage or alliance be killed as well, putting the Roger Squad, Rouge and an unborn Ace in danger. Roger ordered the Roger squad to disband and Rouge went into hiding. Shortly after Roger was executed, Ace was due to birth. However, Rouge was tracked down to a general area, and it every newborn in that area was killed so as to make sure Roger's lineage was gone. As such, Rouge held in Ace for 9 months past his due date, using sheer willpower. When Ace was born, Rouge used her final moments to bless him and name him Gol D. Ace. She passed away shortly after, leaving Ace in the care of a man named Monkey D. Garp, who was Roger's number one rival and enemy. In Roger's last moments before he was executed, he revealed to Garp in a secret meeting that he trusted Garp as much as any of his squadmates. He then requested that Garp look after Ace. At first, Garp refused without a second thought, but Roger reminded him that a newborn child bears no sin. Being something that Garp believes in himself, Garp took Ace in. Garp, due to being an elite ninja, couldn't always be around for Ace due to mission. Due to this, Garp left Ace in the care of a woman named Curly Dadan. Dadan was a bandit and in exchange for not turning her in for her bounty in the Bingo Book, Dadan took care of Ace while Garp was away in the mountains outside of the Five Great Nations. Whenever Garp had free time, he would visit Ace and take care of him, often cheering him up when he's moody by making silly faces. As Ace grew older, Garp "trained" him, which usually involved punches, tossing him into the forest and placing him in harsh environments to make him tough, which worked. Ace spent most of his childhood unaware of his Uchiha lineage.

When Ace was seven, Garp brought his grandson Luffy to Dadan, asking for her to give Luffy the same treatment as Ace, as Luffy's father(Garp's son) was also a well-known criminal. At first, Ace was cold towards Luffy, even spitting on him and giving him a cold glare upon their first meeting. Everyday, Ace would wander into the woods and Luffy would follow him, forgiving him for their first encounter and announcing that he wanted to be friends. Ace would always simply give him a cold stare again, and inflict injuries on him, either by knocking down trees with his staff to hurt him or tossing him into ravines. Once, Ace caused Luffy to get stuck for days within a ravine, giving no care or concern for his well-being when he didn't show up at Dadan's house. However, Luffy's "training" from Garp gave him the ability to get free. When Luffy returned, he still wanted to friends with Ace, but Ace still ignored him, showing indifference. MEETING WITH SABO AND BLUEJAM CONFRONTATION One day, Ace went off on his usual exploits into the woods. Luffy, as usual, followed him, this time hanging behind so he could follow him in secret. Ace, after going deep into the woods, met up with a boy his age named Sabo. Sabo lived out and about and had no real home. He and Ace were stealing money from criminals and ninja alike in hopes that they could save up enough to go a ninja village and become famous ninja. Luffy then popped up, revealing that he heard their entire plan. Sabo demanded to know who Luffy was and Ace said that he was simply a mere brat that followed him around. Luffy then announced that he wanted to be friends with Ace and even Sabo, though he didn't even know who he was. Both refused and tied him. They then decided they would kill Luffy, but were unable to do so as neither had any knowledge of how to kill someone.

Before they could figure out how to kill Luffy, they overheard some gruff voices talking about finding the kids who robbed them. Realizing that they were talking about them, Ace untied Luffy and the trio dived into the bushes.

The ninja walked into the open, and Sabo recognized them as part of the Bluejam Clan, a group of criminal ninjas who were actually relatively weak, but still dangerous to the kids. Somehow, Luffy got caught by them by wandering into the open. Luffy then cried out for Ace to save him. Ace and Sabo then dropped down into the bushes, hiding from the ninja. One of the ninja then proceeded to ask Luffy if he knew where Ace was since it was obvious that they knew each other. Luffy then, albeit terribly, that he didn't. Having a horrible poker face, the ninja immediately knew he was lying and took him away. Ace and Sabo then proceeded to run out from their hiding spot and quickly planned to gather up their money and hide it in a new spot and lay low for a while, believing that Luffy will give the ninja the information they seek. However, later that day, during the evening, Sabo ran up to Ace, who was almost finished moving the money. Sabo then told Ace that Luffy still hadn't talked, suffering torture the entire day to the point that he didn't have the stamina to cry out in pain. Overwhelmed by what Luffy was doing, the two decided to risk their lives and save him. After arriving at the ninja's hideout, they beat them all, including the leader of the squad and freed Luffy. They then fleed backed to Dadan's. Ace then learned that Luffy also has no parents and that he wanted to be Ace's friend because it was better than being lonely. Feeling Luffy's feels, Ace warmed up to Luffy, but would still get annoyed if he cried or did something weak. The trio then spent the next few months sparring, beating up gators and thugs and did dine-and-dash routines. One day while dashing, they overheard a man calling Sabo's name. After returning to the woods, Sabo revealed that he is from a noble family and that the man is his father. However, Ace and Luffy didn't really care, and still regarded him as their friend, much to Sabo's delight. The trio then shared alcohol and became official brothers.

One faithful day, Sabo's father, along with Bluejam, found the brothers in the woods. Threatening to have Bluejam to kill the trio, Sabo gave up quietly and went his father. Luffy wanted to attack them and free Sabo, but Ace stopped him, telling him it's better to let Sabo go for now because it will keep them alive and Sabo safe. Reluctantly, they let Sabo go. Disaster struck later on, however. One day, Sabo wrote a letter to Ace and Luffy, telling them how, while they had originally intended to go out and become ninja when they were 17, Sabo was going to leave early, escaping from the life of a noble, which he hated. Sabo sealed the letter and sent it to be mailed to Dadan's house. He then got on a small boat with some of his father's money and set sail towards Kumogakure. While sailing, his ship crossed paths with a noble, who proceeded to blow up Sabo's boat, killing him. When Sabo's letter arrived, one of Dadan's servants delivered it, along with the news that Sabo had died. Devastated, Luffy broke into tear and cried the entire night. Ace instead got furious and wanted to kill the noble. Dadan then tied him to a tree until he calmed down. After telling her he was fine, she untied him. Ace then went off alone and read the letter. Despite believing that real men shouldn't cry, Ace broke down and cried for hours over his fallen brother. The grief of Sabo dying awakened Ace's Sharinganl, revealing to him the first time ever his Uchiha heritage. LIFE AS A NINJA AND JOINING THE WHITEBEARD SQUAD Years later, when Ace was 17 and Luffy was 14, Ace embarked on his journey to be a ninja. He traveled much of the ninja world and eventually learned and mastered Katon. Using his profiency in Katon, Ace became a well-known ninja with a squad of his own, the Spade squad, a with the name being a play on the term Ace of Spades. Ace wasn't allied to any ninja village, and was labelled a rogue ninja, much to Garp's chargain. He then later went on to make Garp even madder Ace then went and found a legendary ninja by the name of Shanks in order to thank him for saving Luffy's life in the past. It was then he revealed he wanted to take the head of one of the most powerful ninjas to ever exist: Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate, who was the leader of the Whitebeard Squad. After departing from Shanks' company, Ace encountered Jinbe, an Amegakure ninja who had a fish-like appearance, much like Kisame Hoshigaki. Jinbe revealed he knew of Ace's desire to kill Whitebeard and was going to stop him due to Whitebeard once saving Amegakure. Ace and Jinbe fought for five days straight, before both collapsed out of exhaustion. Shortly after, Whitebeard himself showed up. The Spade Squad dived at him to protect Ace, but he easily blew them back. Ace then stood up and using some of the little chakra he had left, he created a wall of fire around himself and Whitebeard to protect his crew. Seeing Whitebeard in front of him, Ace activated his Sharingan. His goal in front of him, it advanced to Two-tomoe. However, his weakened state, the Sharingan consuming what little remained of his chakra and a swift blow from Whitebeard knocked Ace out cold. Ace then awakened several days later on the Whitebeard Squad's ship. He was informed by a man named Thatch that his crew was also on the ship, being held captive. Every day for the next few months, Ace would attempt to kill Whitebeard, only to be defeated with the most minimal of effort from the old man. One day, while Ace was sulking, a man named Marco gave him some food. Ace then asked why they called Whitebeard pops, and Marco revealed it was because he called them his sons. They were all outcasts, but he gave them a place where they belonged and mattered, even though they were wanted rogue ninja. Ace then stifled back a sob. Marco told Ace it would take a very long time before he could kill Whitebeard and that he needed to make a choice: Stay as he was now or accept Whitebeard's mark and join them. Ace then choose to join the Whitebeard Squad.
