Can someone please explain to me how this works?
Itachi used this a few times in the series.

As I understand, genjutsu affects the senses of your opponent
and gets into effect by controlling your opponents chakra flow :
Senses:
-Vision.
-Hearing.
-Smell.
-Taste.
-Touch.

So how does this finger genjutsu work?

I brainstormed about it and came to a few possiblities:

Number 1.
Does he trick you by making you follow his finger up till its at his eye lvl? (tricking you basically into looking in his eye).
So basically it is not truly a finger genjutsu. It would be Vision genjutsu (with eye contact).
Number 2.
Is he able to release a quick long stream of chakra from his finger (like Hyuuga do, but longer), touching the opponent with it and putting his opponent in genjutsu? Quick and thin enough for the opponent not to notice.
This would make it fall under the Touch category.
Number 3.
Does he use the reflection of his ring or nails for the genjutsu?
This would mean it affects the Vision (with eye contact).
Number 4.
Does he use it in a way similar to Izanami. That he only has to see his opponent and doesnt have to
make eye contact with the opponents eyes? It would be a lot weaker than Izanami obviously.
This would mean it is a Vision genjutsu as well (without eye contact)

If all of the above are wrong (possibly), than how does he do it?
How do you cast genjutsu with your finger?

I hope someone knows how it works.
If the answer is unknown, which one do you find most likely the case?
If you dont expect it to be one of the four, how do you think yourself that it works?

who knows? maybe all of them... maybe the reflection of his sharingan is seen through his finger nail or ring.. who knows.. it wasn't explained. I thought of all of those explanations too though.

If it is not explained, do you believe it could be one of the four i listed? If so, which one do you prefer?

all of them :) honestly it might be similar to hypnosis .. the opponents concentration or attention goes to one point and becomes your mind slave. How did Kurenai perform her genjutsu remember? Stared at her for too long or at the right moment? How did Kabuto cast his genjutsu on the stadium during the chunin exam?

I imagine he cast the genjutsu by tricking the opponent into looking at his finger. the finger itself is the catalyst for the genjutsu. there could be chakra emitting from the finger that causes the genjutsu to activate apon looking at the finger. the user does not require eye to eye contact but does require you to look at his finger.

Which category do you expect it to be in?
-Vision.
-Hearing.
-Smell.
-Taste.
-Touch.

So when one looks at the chakra coming out of the finger, the genjutsu would be activated?
This would be a Vision genjutsu?

Vision based Genjutsu. Not hard to figure out. Utakata (Finger Genjutsu) affects the targets brain after the target takes a glance at the finger, after that the target starts to see strange images, meaning it's more based on affecting his sight even though it affects the rest of his senses as well. It being any other Genjutsu than vsion based Genjutsu doesn't make sense since sound based Genjutsu doesn't work like that and it has nothing to do with the other based Genjutsu you listed.

Itachi paints his nails with a reflective nail polish. The reflection of his sharingan bounces off of his finger. When he points at someone they instinctually look at his finger and bam.

Itachi only used sight based genjutsu. Hopefully Sakura will show the other 3 + the 2 shown

I like the reflection theory personally. It makes more sense then trying to devise a more ellaborate method of casting genjutsu from his finger tip. As long as he has some knowledge of how light reflects off of surfaces he is good to go.

I think it was just a plot device to show sasukes face and naruto have doubt in himself to show some character development later on.

Genjutsu works by extending your chakra to manipulate your opponents.

Finger genjutsu works on your sight. By seeing the finger you get caught. Same way kurenai's genjutsu worked by sight. Once the seals are done, you're under genjutsu through visual means.

It's a regular genjustu, not that hard.

Itachi's genjustu doesn't limit to his eyes only, he can use standard genjustu.

His is so advanced that it may not require hand seal.

It's like you people are comparing Amatersu to any type of standard Katon.

OP: It affects the senses, but never specify which of the five.

Thanks for the answers people.
It could indeed be similar to normal genjutsu with handsigns, only Itachi uses his finger instead like a boss :).

Think it has something to do with the ring and light.

Finger genjutsu is a misleading name for the technique. All Itachi is doing is relocating where he casts his genjutsu from.

He doesn't need his eyes to cast genjutsu, a body part like his finger is enough.

Itachi could for example cast Tsukuyomi from his finger tip instead of his eyes as he suggested to Naruto.

This completely shits on the avoiding eye contact strategy. To avoid Itachi's genjutsu you must completely shut off your eye-sight like Kabuto did (and yes I know Kabuto that was defeated by genjutsu anyway).
