Spain is out of the competition. I don't believe they can turn this around.

It's been a long time since Spain was left out so early.

^ Second half hasn't started yet, don't make early conclusions.

Spain is out of the competition. I don't believe they can turn this around.

And you know I don't want them too, not after winning three major championships in a row.

I'm not rooting for Spain but I'm kinda disappointed in them. They're playing frantically, they seem so desperate and I feel like that's throwing them off their game. I mean, their possession game is nothing compared to what they usually do. It's almost as if the pressure is getting to them.

They did say something that they might play horribly due to Brazil's climate that they are not used to at all.

The way Spain are playing it can very well be 4-0, 5-0.
I have never seen xabi alonso this demotivated, whole team is playing as if they aren't interested in this world cup, well if they aren't then Go Chile.

This is exactly the type of victory Netherlands needed. One where they played averagely, defended with mediocrity, fought with sweat and resource, underwent tactic modification and still managed to make a comeback and win through individual brilliance.

Psychologically, this will boost them that they can both win against the strongest favorites like Spain through teamplay and tactical coherence as well as highly-spirited underdogs like Australia through luck and talent. This win will also give them much-needed confidence but altogether put all players who were still too much on cloud nine after Spain's victory back to Earth. Also, players who did not perform up to their level like Sneijder and especially De Guzman will surely be forced to step up, considering Van Gaal's nature.

The bolded part, that description exactly applies to their earlier match against Spain. Back then their defense was also very mediocre, did they play averagely and did they win on individual brilliance. The only difference is that Australia was simply playing better than Spain, which makes it that more obvious how bad Spain actually played.

I just realized that the Netherlands actually reminds me of Liverpool this season. They scored a hellish amount of goals, but Liverpool also had to take in a lot of goals, way too much for the #2 of the Premier League. The Netherlands is exactly the same. Van Persie and Robben are taking advantage of the mistakes of the opponents to their utmost efficiency. Fact is the weight of their team almost entirely falls on their attacking line. The moment something happens to that, they have a serious problem.

That is just an excuse it is much harder for Dutch and the German I don't see them complaining.

Or a team that actually has an excellent defense.

Who knows, maybe they aren't used to it, maybe they didn't practice enough, maybe they are having issues within their team that are not being shown. They are failing for some reason, lack of motivation is one, no doubt.

I'll have to totally agree with that. It seems like it was in tension all the time and played the game while relying on the mistakes of the enemy team. I feel like the Netherlands we had in 1974 will never ever come back again, despite the players i has. The game at those times was just revolutionary and now they seem way to shocked, hurried, the defense is quite bad and the tension they get into themselves only makes it worse.

I do agree for most part; though they did play better against Spain. Especially the midfield 3 of De Jong-de Guzman-Sneijder were efficient against Spain. They were woeful here; though Australia played better even if Spain is reputed for its midfield prowess. De Jong was sloppy in passes in this match against Australia, though helped defensively. Sneijder was completely out of it - terrible in its passing and unable to inspire any creativity. Showing more and more than he cannot be a reliability like in 2010; though RVP/Robben seem to shine nonetheless. De Guzman had a good passing rate that was useless as if we look without the stat, most of his passes were backwards towards the back 3 or goalkeeper, and all 4 were pretty uncomfortable with their footwork and they considerably slowed any buildup in passing for Holland. Strootman is immensely missed in this squad.

There's lots of things that Holland failed to do in this match - it's not like they played the replica of their match against Spain but they found it harder because Australia played better. It's part of the story but not the whole.

As for Liverpool, the comparison holds true but apart the two goalscorers in Suarez/Sturridge, the young guns - Sterling, Coutinho, Henderson ect...scored a lot. The 2 world-class talents of RVP & Robben can provide the Suarez-Sturridge-like palette for the goals. But the youngsters should step up more in offense then, for Holland to flourish in that style more. All while, trying to play better in defense that is! Depay showed a start in that way, we can say. Perhaps him, Lens, Blind ect...can follow up more often when RVP/Robben are not on such a great day.

It's official Spain are out of the world cup, serious team reconstruction and strategy rethink lies ahead of them.
As for Chile they are closer than ever to qualify out of this group.

Cameroon vs Croatia next.
