Despite the loss, we actually played rather good. Much better than the pre-WC friendlies against Honduras and Ecuador. To point out a few good points: Sterling was by far our best player. His direct runs through the defence of Italy provided us with most of our chances and looked dangerous every time he was on the ball. We looked good as a team and actually managed to play consistently well for the full 90 minutes as it was a worry that the heat would get to us and we'd tire out at the latter stages of the game. In general, we played fluently and well at times but defensively, we are a bit frail. With Baines and Johnson more preferable for going down the wing to attack, we're exposed at the back at times and Italy made us pay by constantly hitting us on the right flank which ended up as one of their goals, though both goals were defensive frailties; especially the first as it coasted past four of our players and all it took was one person to just get a touch.

The lack of penetration in the final third is our most worrying aspect. Our build-up play is good but getting it into the box is where we lack except for times on the counter. Rooney played poorly in the second half, squandering our best chances of the game and it's just generally disappointing. He's been so ineffectual in the last few games that I think it should considered to drop him especially if Hodgson is adamant in playing Welbeck in the team. Having Lallana-Sterling-Welbeck as the three attacking midfielders seems a good aspect. Rooney playing in an unnatural position is just hopeless.

Italy didn't have the best of games, I don't believe, apart from Pirlo but that's just Pirlo. Sirigu never held the ball and if we played two up front (maybe Sturridge-Rooney), those could have been costly. Their defence was pretty solid but nothing special, we got through a number of times but was unable to finish or deliver anything decent and the attack never posed that much of a threat. Most crosses were dealt with appropriately. Italy just played a controlling style of play and just their two best chances count and it resulted in our loss.

I know that you're rooting for England but if you're going to make commentary about Italy performance then you should give credits where its due,

Italy didn't have the best of their games, but apart from Pirlo there's some players that perform admirably in the match
like Darmian, in his 1st for world cup games he marauded down the right hand side throughout, delivering a number of good crosses while defensively responsible,

Antonio Candreva, that guys is tireless and a thorn in England's side throughout. Delivered a pinpoint cross for Balotelli's goal and was a nightmare to deal with

And there is super Mario Balotelli, Only had a couple of half chances, but managed to grab the game's winning goal, leading the line well and showing the maturity he has under Prandelli.

And you also mention about England's lacks of penetration in the final third yes ? that's got nothing to do with the England players playing poorly, its all part of the Italians game plan, did you noticed how the game changed when Thiago Motta comes from the bench ? yes that completely Break everything that England tried to deliver from midfield and forced them to take refuge to the flank where Darmian and Chellini is waiting for them, in the end they have no choice but crosses and random shoot outside the box.

Just turned into the last match and saw the abstracts of the two last matches and I have to say that I didn't expect any of the outcomes. I refused to watch the complete Greece - Columbia match because I know for a fact that Greece is going to contend with its matches for one of the most boring matches. Once they get the ball they have no clue what to do with it. They did have a chance here and there but as shown they had no clue how to execute it properly. They are a completely defensively oriented team and I have no idea how they made it through. Their opponent did their homework very well and they managed to beat them even without Falcao.

I completely missed Italy against England even though it was announced as the match of the night. Short replays have shown that Italy was the better opponent even though I'll try to get a full replay and watch the whole match to make a complete and objective analogy.

I just turned into the 2nd half of Jpn - Civ and it seems to be an interesting match. Japan as the outsiders managed to score one and I'm wondering if Civ will have the strength to come back.

I think that is some serious display of skill and discipline. They came back serious and they delivered. I admire CdIV (whatever the shortcut is @_@) at this point. Very interesting play.

Idk why I'm still up and watching this game. It must be my mentality that is waiting for some shinobi action to finish the match for Japan and lock in some points! LOL!

in all fairness, Darmian and Candreva weren't anything special. Italy favoured that side from the beginning with a tactic employed for such a thing. Leighton Baines was by himself most of the time since Rooney rarely tracked back and it was 2v1 almost all of the time they attacked down that flank. Most, if not all, crosses were delivered straight into Joe Hart's hands and were dealt with. So I wouldn't highlight them as being that pivotal as anyone in their positions would have done the same anyway.

And penetration is a HUGE problem for England. It always has been. We lack the final ball, the killer pass and the guy to get on to a drilled or deep cross. Our wing men put in 2-3 great crosses into the penalty area during the game but there was no one on the end of them since Sturridge is by himself and Rooney plays too deep. It's not just against Italy that we fail to get through, the other day we couldn't score against a 10-man Honduras.

Then you're saying that every single one of England players have no tactical awareness yes ? just because most crosses ended up in Hart hands, doesn't mean its nothing special, if anything the Italians is trying to measure how should they proceed with this advantage, and they did just that, regardless of Baines situation its required a hell of a player to take advantage for such situation, England also have the same advantage in the flank but the Italian never let them capitalized on that, and also England target men is unable to win the aerial duel for the crosses without capitalizing on the Azzuri's defense error,

Like i said England fate has been sealed ever since Thiago Motta comes from the bench and how Hudgson react to that changed, instead of adding more creativity in the midfield he introduce more attacking minded players in the pitch which is one thing they dont need, like Wilshere and Lallana, when they should have bring a player like Milner and take out Gerrard who did nothing for 90 minutes cause he's too scared of getting trolled by Pirlo, with Milner on the pitch it would have been easier for England to take advantage from the flank because Milner is known for his ability to cut edge from the flank and delivered a deadly cross for England players to feast on,

And please don't use friendly for a reference, Italy drew with Luxembourg 1-1. where England run rampart and scored 8 past them, and don't underestimate Honduras, they finished ahead of Mexico in the concacaf qualifiers for a reason.

I'm a Spain supporter, but let me say this now: Spain's World Cup chances doesn't look bright.
If they don't make some changes... then there remain only 2 major title contenders: Argentina and Germany.

Don't forget about Brazil and Netherlands.:p
Next match is Switzerland vs Ecuador. It is tight encounter, Switzerland has overall better team and I think Ecuador need to 'deliver' some serious performances(and I am expecting them to do so). My eyes will be on Ecuador attack with United winger Louis Antonio Valencia and former City young talent Felipe Caicedo. It will be interesting to see, whether they will be able to pose some danger for defense of Senderos, Djourou and Lichsteiner.:yeah:

Calm down, they only lost once (and horribly), but everyone is still in the game.

Lmao. Sorry, pardon me. xD

So about England v Italy;
Italy was scared two days ago that they would lose to England because their goalkeeper was still injured. They actually used their replacement with fear and guess what? He is a total star now. He saved Italy's ass 7 freaking times of the 8 (aimed towards goal) shoots from England.

This isn't about whose defense or who speed is better. Everyone played well and fair. Italy just happened to have a star among theirselves! Italy only shoot 5 times, aimed for goal and of those five chances two went in.

Says a lot, right?

This England team is a completely new dynamic, a whole new team. The WC is unknown territory for them. To name the debutants for this tournament, there is: Jagielka, Baines, Sterling, Sturridge, Henderson, Lallana, Wilshere, Barkley, the list goes on. This is more of a trial and error sort of process the team is going through and without getting too much into it, their team efficiency has taken a knock. Yes, we do lack creativity in the final third, hence our problem of penetration. We knock the ball around and inevitably end up losing it or wasting it with a half-chance. That's been the problem lately or even for a while now because we lack that Beckham or Scholes quality that Wishere, Henderson or Welbeck can't deliver.

Substitutions might have been a problem but it would have been hard in the manager's position to make such a substitution. Gerrard actually played well in my eyes, obviously not like Pirlo but Gerrard was composed and had great distribution of the ball while in the hole between defence and midfield. His age has caught up with him and can no longer run down the middle and pose an attacking threat. He's been playing like that for Liverpool all season and has been one of their talismans in midfield. Henderson is a workhorse in midfield and because of that, had to be subbed for Wilshere due to fatigue. Wilshere, being one of our more technically gifted players, is very... Whimsical, I'm not sure. It doesn't quite happen. Either it be recovering from injuries or confidence, he doesn't really impact the game. Maybe he's better as a starting player but 80% of the time he's unable to do the full 90 minutes. Lallana coming on in the 80th minute was a bit too late for me. He had no impact on the game and should have been a starter for Welbeck. He's very technical and actually creative with the ball and can split a defence in parts but like I said, it was too late in the game for him to get into his stride.

My point being is that this team is completely new and have only been tested out in 2-3 games. There have been drastic changes from the qualifying rounds English team. I'm not really taking anything away from Italy but we should have really gotten a point from it at most. I could go more into it, like the pitch condition, tactical set up and all that jazz but I'm not bothered to type it all out >_>

@Xarpius

Sirigu has been great for the past couple of years for PSG and has been on the cusp of the italian team but obviously, a talent like Buffon is always going to be the contender for the spot. In the beginning of the game, I believe Hodgson told the players to have a 'shoot on sight' policy to unnerve the keeper but that didn't work. Most of our shots were outside of the box and our best chances were off target.

Also, we should have gotten a penatly. Just saying.

Damn. Put the players aside for a sec. Does she even know how much of a badass our coach use to be? Worrying about Aus v Neth is not even on the list.

Ecuador vs. Switzerland match is next
Ecuador are going to employ their standard 4-4-2 formation which depends on their wingers and Valencia, they have been lackluster in defense but their attack is going to create problems

Switzerland are a perennial world cup team, but never create a lasting impression, their youth development systems are probably one of the best but lack of a strong league is their biggest obstacle

This time they are playing with an integrated team, Drmic, Shaqiri, Rodriguez are their star players
In qualifying and warm up matches we saw they have a problem clearing packed defenses, it won't be a problem in this match
Their defense is usually good but now they are playing with a very dynamic team, so we never know

Early start will be the key as 1p.m. start according to local time will be beneficial for ecuador, as they will acclimatize with the heat conditions better than the swizz

2-1 for ecuador
