I personally more male characters than female for the same reason you delivered lol.
I like more male characters because there seems to be a wider diversity in personalities. Most females in anime are either bashing the male lead, too energetic or the complete opposite...they're usually quite 2D personality wise.

Yes, Storm is waay better, more complex than Phoenix.
Not to mention that she is the only one who can host the Dark Phoenix inside her body.
