In what states? Republican or Democrats?

While I am against the too much welfare benefits but I wont deny them charity. I always thought of building basic messdeck like shelters for them and providing them optimum food in exchange for community service like like Patrolling the streets against muggers, helping old ladies across the street, guides, snitches etc .... I think that would be a better use of resources.

I don't even feed the homeless in the first place.

Although I do live outside of the US, and we don't have a law like this, barely anyone here feeds the homeless.
There are barely any homeless people where I live that are actually good people.

Most of them go around asking people for money and spend it on tobacco, alcohol or drugs.
They say that they want to buy food, but every time I've offered them food they say they would prefer the money.
In some cases I've actually seen people buy food for the homeless and the homeless person proceeds to sell his food for money.

Judging from most of the videos I've seen from pranksters pranking the homeless and helping them out, most of them in the US actually look like they're in need of help.

Anyway, I doubt any officer will enforce this law on his own.

When I was like 7 I gave some homeless dude one of my sandwiches from Burger King and he threw it back at me and started throwing bottles at our car...

So maybe it's for the better.

what the hell? poor you :(

I think if you feed a homeless person food that is far from fresh or expired, you could get sued for lots of money, making it entirely your fault.

Maybe because feeding them is kind of 'charity work', and the more used they get to it, the faster the unemployment rises since they don't need to worry about buying food if people feed them constantly - which is the opposite of what the government wants. Nevertheless, making it illegal and giving fines is an exaggeration.

Yeah, instead of sitting in one place all day getting free food maybe they can go look for a job or something now.

And why is a person homeless? Could be for very many reasons. Let's not assume that every homeless person is a sob story, but let's also not assume that every homeless person is a criminal either.

The reason they're doing this is to stop freeloading, but that doesn't mean they aren't willing to help the homeless. If you're willing to help the homeless, coordinate your efforts with social service agencies, that way you'll be helping the people that actually need help.

Look past headlines and read into the stories. But, I do believe the government is handling the homeless poorly in some cases. They're focusing more on cleaning their streets of homeless people than they are on job creation. Wouldn't have had this problem if Romney won in 12'.

I agree on the problems it can cause a society. A society cannot progress without action.

I'll be trying to remove the euphemisms and state it for exactly what it is in the following statements.

It seems, that essentially, society cannot move forward without an application of survival of the fittest (and this is what it is, just applied differently). If you're weak (not willing to do or not putting in effort, enough effort, or lack skills) then you can either die on the street or "live poorly". The majority of society seems to already support this ideology. Much to my chagrin, I can't deny that I do as well (or rather, that I acknowledge it as the only solution to progressing society). I can't fathom any alternative to progressing as a society without an "the weak can die, survival is for the strong" ideology. They're intertwined. No matter how much I ponder a solution, I arrive to the same conclusion (doesn't mean I've stopped pondering it of course)

Disagreement among the population comes in when this ideal is applied on higher levels, but we all (or most of us) agree when it's applied on a much less conspicuous plane.

But what can we do. Another one of humanity's conundrums.

Also, so it doesn't get twisted. I don't mind giving food and money to the homeless, and I couldn't care less their reason for choosing to live that way. I simply recognize the problem it presents for society if everyone got the idea to live this way. Though, to me, that's as about as possible as the entire population acquiring the propensity for smoking.
