Since Mashima is taking references from Norse mythology and various others and shaping it like he want then let us look this at this way.........I am on my phone so I will make it short. XD
Ragnarok aka the dragon king festival,, I think its a bit too early for that chapter, but at the same time it could also setup the natsu vs zeref arc.
I will come back with the details later. Got some charity to take care of.
Ragnarok is the name for the Dragon King Festival in Albareth and in Norse mythology, a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of the gods Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdallr, and Loki. Culminating in the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water.
If the theme of this Ragnarok is death of gods then there are gods in FT manga. God Ankhseram, God Serena, 18 Gods of Yakuma. Also Zeref if he sees himself as a God(Immortal being) and Acnologia, who goes by the title "the herald of the end of days". Going by Acnologia's title, mashima planned Acnologia's character as the one who ends the current era and let the next generation spring up.
Think about it.........Once(400 years ago) dragons ruled this entire world and then Acnologia rises up and killed all the dragons thus ending their era which is also called as Dragon King Festival(RagnaroK). After which a new era, a human dominated era started. And now after that Acnologia showed up again after 400 years in Tenrou Island arc. Now what was it's meaning behind it's appearance now in this era.
And Zeref's goal is pretty much similar to that. He wants to kill both Humans and Acnologia and thus put an end to this era and give a new start, a new harmony like
