The water suddenly turned bloody red and from the beach sand begin to rise, hundreds of mummies that would then start converging towards you. All the fishes in the sea immediately became floaters as they died. Priest laughs maniacally while hidden from you. It was actually a genjutsu and Priest want to see how his student reach to it. Atleast it was his special way of welcoming his students.

Byakuren lazily yawned, and in a brief moment the scene changed before him. The calm, blue sea had transfixed itself into a crimson liquid, atop of the now blood-like sea, fish of several species littered deceased.. "Not again!" Byakuren grumbled. "Bloody mist! Every time I fall asleep I have these painstakingly realistic dreams! Can't an old man get a break!" He'd not even noticed the approaching mummified constructs approaching, as he'd been to busy grumbling, and pouting about the "dream" he believed he'd had been experiencing. "Gah! Just like a Genjutsu, such problematic nonsense!" Byakuren grumbled one last time, before nicking his thumb in efforts to wake up from his "dream." The scene began to reverse itself, the sea returned deep blue, the sand remained stagnant, and the sea creatures of the aquatic flourished with life. Byakuren looked around, before returning to his meditative state. However, a small tingle of pain arose in his left hand, to which gathered his attention. His thumb had leaked blood. "Stupid dreams. Stupid old brain!" He sighed in an olden pout, finally returning to his previous action of meditation.

Byakuren jumped in surprise at the middle-aged youngster appearing behind him unexpectedly, tapping him on the shoulder. "My boy, my boy... Don't you know not to sneak up on us old folk? Damn near give me a heartache! And I get enough of those as is!" Byakuren grumbled, karate chopping the middle-aged man on the noggin softly. "Chakra you ask? Genjutsu?" Byakuren nuzzled his temple in ignorance. "I was in a Genjutsu? My dreams are more horrifying than that!" Byakuren sighed, coming to realization of the situation; yawning to fully wake up from his slumber. "If you want the textbook definition of chakra, I was given this scroll by a youngster named Sasuke Uchiha." Byakuren hands over the scroll to the man. Spoiler ±± Chakra ±± Chakra is the energy that is formed through the passive combination of both the Physical and the Spiritual energies in a sentient being (every living being with a conscious mind has chakra). Physical energy corresponds to the vitality of the body and its own energy. Spiritual energy corresponds to the mind or spirit, and comes from the awareness and "soul" of each sentient being. Some ninjas have high levels of chakra because they have great physical energy (like the Akimichi or even Tsunade) and others because of their spiritual energy (like the Uchiha and the Yamanaka). However, its much more difficult to increase the spiritual energy than the physical one, thus why all ninjas pass through intensive physical workout. Yin and Yang are based on this same concept. Yin is the basis of the spirit while Yang the basis of the body. In this i won't go into more dept because there are 2 things to consider: Yin/Yang manipulation in our RP is different from the manga one and both are more or less inacessible. Chakra flows in a circulatory system inside your body, in a way that much resembles the blood circulation. This circulatory system has 8 small reservoirs that act as both storage but also chakra regulation. These are the eight inner gates. Along your circulatory system, small "portals" exist that enable you to expell chakra from your body. These are called Tenketsu and there are 361 of them scattered allong the body. When a tenketsu opens, chakra poors out of it. Its by molding the chakra that comes out of the tenketsu that you produce ninjutsu and genjutsu. "However youngster, if to sum what chakra is in my own definition... I'd say chakra was the energy of life itself. Without chakra nothing would exist. Chakra is both our physical, and spiritual energy in short." Byakuren scratched his beard, stretching himself in efforts to ready himself for what came next. "Genjutsu on the other hand..." Byakuren paused, grunting with the pop of his spine. "Ugck! Now that's the spot youngster. Always limber up before you partake in training! Advice from an esteem veteran! Now where was I? Ahh yes..." "Genjutsu is the manipulation of one's spiritual energy; chakra passed from the user into their targeted victim through the cranial nerves to cause illusions; facades. That's the short, and to the point definition anyhow." Byakuren stretched one last time, causing a final pop to radiate from his lats. "Ahhh. Shall we get started sunny boy?"

Priest looks at the scroll and coupled with what he said. He sits on a boulder.

You immediately see the training ground turn to a pure white plastic clearing with no spot or grass or any feature safe for the boulder Priest was sitting on which now looks like a magnificent chair morphed from the new terrain.

Now as you said, Genjutsu require one to put his chakra into another's brain so one could be able to plant/write false reality and make the brain interpret it to the victim. However, there are always some loophole to genjutsu which is also the reason why we are able to detect we are in one.

Before going to genjutsu detection, to be able to put one's chakra into another's brain, requires one to know where the person's position is either through basic means or advance means. Secondly, the person must be able to control chakra to a high degree. After this two things, one is fully able to instantly plant chakra into someone's brain and put him in an illusion.

Now about the loop hole. Genjutsu is always aimed to affect atleast one of your 5 senses which are sight, touch, smell, taste and hearing. So by using some of this senses, either those that are not affected by the genjutsu or those that are affected by comparing the situation before and after a particular situation, with accurate deductions not bordering metagaming, you would be able to give an accurate detection of a genjutsu.
In our RP, you are required to detect you are in a genjutsu and give a full detail how you did it before attempting to break yourself from it.

Priest brings out a flask from within his coat and sip its content.

You broke from my genjutsu using pain. That is brilliant but what if my genjutsu was stronger than that? What would you do to yourself as the small cut won't be enough?

Also do you know of other means to break from a genjutsu?
