Alrighty, I’m back with another Six Paths Sage Mode blog that literally nobody asked for. Upon re-evaluating it today, I found that my last one had some glaring errors, failed to expand on some crucial points, and was generally difficult to navigate, so I thought I’d rewrap and package it with some relevant new theories I’ve been cooking up for good measure. Keep in mind that this is all just my speculation, and feel free to mercilessly tear it apart if I’ve made a mistake somewhere.
So for starters, I’d like to take a moment to cover the topic that I failed to in my last post. That is to say, the Yin Power and Yang Power that Naruto and Sasuke received from Hagoromo in chapter 671. It’s pretty much uncontested by the community that Naruto and Sasuke were each given half of Hagoromo’s chakra based on Naruto’s dialogue from chapter 673... so I suspect my disagreement will not be very popular, but here goes nothing.
My reasoning for being critical of this idea is very simple. It’s because Hagoromo is dead. Unlike Indra and Ashura, Hagoromo’s chakra did not reincarnate over the ages; he has no chakra of his own to give. So how can this be reconciled with what occurs in chapter 671? The answer lies in the preceding chapter, this page in particular:
There, Hagoromo establishes that his chakra can be reproduced, specifically by mixing the chakras of his two inheritors--Indra and Ashura. When Madara did this, he awakened the Rinnegan. Additionally, we know that his chakra can also be reproduced by mixing the chakras of his other inheritors--Shukaku, Matatabi, Isobu, Son Goku, Kokuo, Saiken, Chomei, Gyuki, and Kurama. When Obito and Madara did this, they awakened Hagoromo’s senjutsu.
Here, we can see Naruto, Kurama’s jinchuriki, receiving chakra from Matatabi, Isobu, Son Goku, Kokuo, Saiken, and Chomei:
And here we can see that the chakra given to Naruto by Obito includes Shukaku’s and Gyuki’s:
As for Sasuke, Indra’s reincarnation, we can see him being given chakra by Hashirama, Ashura’s reincarnation, here:
And being revived through the use of Hashirama’s cells here:
So with that in mind, I’m inclined to believe that it was actually Naruto and Sasuke that brought forth Hagoromo’s chakra themselves, which caused him to appear, not the other way around. In other words, Hagoromo didn’t appear and give them his chakra, but rather he manifested from the Six Paths chakra that they already had and sealed it into their hands in the form of the sun and moon tattoos. More on them later.
Now, the implication of this is that Naruto, using the same method as Obito, awakened Six Paths Senjutsu/Six Paths Yang Power on his own, and that Sasuke, using the same method as Madara, awakened the Rinnegan/Six Paths Yin Power on his own. On Naruto’s end, this is something that is supported by Shikamaru Hiden:
However, that’s not to say that each of them received nothing from Hagoromo. Specifically, Six Paths Sage Mode was granted to Naruto (per the 4th databook), and the Rinne Sharingan (or “sharrinegan” or “tomoe rinnegan” or whatever you prefer to call it) is presumably what was granted to Sasuke.
Now, if you didn’t read my previous thread, it might seem like I’ve just contradicted myself here. How could Naruto have unlocked Six Paths Senjutsu by himself, and still have Six Paths Sage Mode granted to him?
To address that, I first have to explain what I contend is a misconception on the part of some readers. See, Sage Mode is a form taken by someone who synchronizes with nature, and assimilates natural energy with their physical and spiritual energy to create Senjutsu Chakra. So it’s not too unreasonable to assume, then, that “Six Paths” Sage Mode is just a Sage Mode using “Six Paths” Senjutsu Chakra as its vehicle. However, this assumption is actually incorrect, because the two uses of “Six Paths” are actually referring to different things, which I believe is the source of all confusion. In order to highlight this, I’m going to need to explain in more detail what Six Paths Senjutsu and Six Paths Sage Mode actually are.
Starting with Six Paths Sage Mode, according to the databook, it is defined as a higher form of Sage Mode granted by Hagoromo that is based around the complete, universal comprehension of all things. This form can be differentiated from normal Sage Mode by its lack of pigmentation around the eyes:
Like normal Sage Mode, Six Paths Sage Mode is powered by the collection of natural energy:
***NOTE: The reason it is labeled “Six Paths” is because it is a special variant of the technique invented by Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths.***
The term “Six Paths Senjutsu Chakra” refers to the special chakra of the Ten Tails. We can infer this much from cross referencing the databook with chapter 673. If you look back at Naruto’s usage of Six Paths Sage Mode in chapter 672 above, you’ll notice that Naruto’s Truth Seeker Orbs haven’t manifested; likewise, the only mention of Truth Seeker Orbs on the Six Paths Sage Mode databook page is about how Naruto deflected Madara’s to defend Gai.
Looking at the databook page for Truth Seeker Orbs, it says that when Six Paths Senjutsu blossoms within an individual, the black spheres with the power of the five elements appear in a halo around them. Then, on the databook page for the Ten Tails Coffin Seal, it says that Truth Seeker Orbs accompany those who obtain the power of the nine Tailed Beasts.
This is reflected in chapter 673, where Naruto’s Truth Seeker Orbs manifest not with the activation of his Six Paths Sage Mode, but rather his tailed beast chakra cloak:
And, of course, this is also consistent with the fact that both Obito and Madara manifested Truth Seeker Orbs when they took the Ten Tails into themselves, and with the fact that a Truth Seeker Orb formed from Kaguya’s Ten Tails transformation:
This all serves not only as evidence that Six Paths Sage Mode and Six Paths Senjutsu are not the same thing, but also that Six Paths Senjutsu Chakra is indeed the chakra of the Ten Tails. As for why that is, it likely qualifies as Senjutsu Chakra because it was born from the harvesting of natural energy from the world through the Shinju. This is confirmed by Kurama below and in the anime original Kaguya arc:
In contrast to Six Paths Sage Mode, which has lack of pigmentation around the eyes as its tell-tale sign, the identifier of a Six Paths Senjutsu user is actually the markings on their chakra cloak. Specifically, a rinnegan over three rows of magatama. While similar patterns of swirls and magatama have appeared on Naruto’s back in his various chakra modes, this particular pattern accompanies all Six Paths Senjutsu users:
***NOTE: The reason it is labeled “Six Paths” is because Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths, was the Ten Tails’ jinchuriki, and it is thus associated with him. This isn’t too much of a stretch given that several characters in the series have equivocated being the Ten Tails’ jinchuriki and “having the power of the Sage of the Six Paths.”***
Now, after I posted my last blog on this subject, there was an influx of replies saying that Six Paths Senjutsu can’t be independent of a Sage Mode because “Senjutsu is what Sage Mode does.” However, this is not necessarily the case. Case in point, Orochimaru’s curse marks are also a form of Senjutsu:
This is actually a very convenient example, because curse mark users are mechanically very similar to Ten Tails jinchuriki with regards to their usage of Senjutsu. In the case of curse marks, instead of entering Sage Mode and directly collecting natural energy, Jugo’s blood is used as a middleman that passively absorbs natural energy and gives it to the user in the form of a transformation. The Ten Tails similarly acts as a middle man, using its parasitic Shinju form to steal natural energy from the world it attaches itself to, and transfers it to the user in the form of Chakra Fruit traditionally, or as a Tailed Beast transformation if it is sealed within the user.
If anyone’s still not convinced of the distinction between Six Paths Sage Mode and Six Paths Senjutsu, here’s the final nail in the coffin:
Here Madara notes that Naruto possesses “the senjutsu of the six paths,” and goes on to state that he too possesses that power. However, if you look at the databook page for Six Paths Sage Mode, its only listed user is Naruto Uzumaki. Madara does not possess Six Paths Sage Mode, but does possess Six Paths Senjutsu. This would not be possible if they were the same ability.
So, now that the distinction between Six Paths Sage Mode (the unique form granted to Naruto by Hagoromo) and Six Paths Senjutsu (the powers granted to those who possess the Ten Tails’ senjutsu chakra) have been established, it becomes possible to analyze Naruto’s post-war abilities with a degree of confidence. The best example to use here is Naruto Gaiden, which contains the last Naruto-centric battles drawn by Kishimoto. As can clearly be seen in the panel below, Naruto’s sage mode lacks the pigmentation around the eyes, which we’ve established indicates that he beyond any doubt still has Six Paths Sage Mode:
However, it is also visible that his Tailed Beast cloak lacks the rinnegan-over-magatama pattern that indicates Six Paths Senjutsu, instead resembling his V2 Kurama cloak, which is identifiable by a black dot with thick lines extending to his shoulders and arms:
From those two pages alone, we have all that we need to answer the question of whether or not Naruto lost his powers from the War arc. He did not lose the power that was granted to him by Hagoromo, the Six Paths Sage Mode, but he did use up the granted chakra of the Tailed Beasts. And that’s perfectly consistent with what Sasuke says during VOTE2:
Now, I’ve seen a lot of people say that the chakra fragments granted to Naruto by the Tailed Beasts would regenerate over time, just as the chakra of the Tailed Beasts do. While I understand why people would think this way, looking at Naruto as a jinchuriki of all the tailed beasts, that idea falls apart when you look at what the Tailed Beasts actually did:
They did not seal themselves within Naruto, but rather transferred their chakra to him through physical contact. Luckily, this is something we’ve seen happen before, so we can observe precisely how that works. Namely, Naruto’s sharing of Kurama’s chakra to the Shinobi Alliance:
In this instance, Naruto transferred Kurama’s chakra by the same mechanism to Hinata and thousands of other shinobi. If we follow the logic I mentioned earlier, we should assume that all of those ninja were forevermore jinchuriki of miniature Kurama’s… but that’s obviously not the case. So, taking into account the empirical evidence, Naruto’s Tailed Beast chakra (with the exception of Kurama’s) does not regenerate. Of course, the same would apply to the chakra that Sasuke received from Hashirama.
Of course, we know that he must have some traces of their chakra left, since Hagoromo instructs the Tailed Beasts to use him as a means to communicate with each other. However, in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations episode 55, we get a glimpse of just how little chakra is required for a Tailed Beast to establish a mental link when Shukaku contacts Gaara by this method:
Keep in mind that Gaara had Shukaku completely extracted from him as a teenager, and the imprint left behind was enough to establish contact some fifteen years later. It’s clear that this fact is not proof one way or the other that Naruto could still use the Tailed Beasts’ chakra natures in his adulthood. Although he can still do so in the video games, I'm not convinced that qualifies as legitimate evidence.
Now, personally I think the most difficult thing to determine is if Naruto’s “jesus healing” power was lost. A lot of people attribute the power to the sun tattoo, as it was involved in his every usage of it, and say it was lost when Naruto and Sasuke activated the Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei. This is one possible answer, and it would explain why he opted to instead use Kurama’s healing on Sasuke in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, but it always rubbed me the wrong way to think that Naruto’s tattoo granted him special abilities whereas Sasuke’s didn’t seem to have any additional functionality at all. Additionally, the ability was strongly suggested to be a derivative of Hagoromo’s Creation of All Things, which was itself strongly suggested in the 4th databook to be part of the Six Paths Sage Mode package, which indicates that he should still have it.
The only way I could justify him losing it is if applying the technique required Six Paths Chakra, which could explain his use of the sun tattoo,
So, in conclusion, with all of this, can we finally make the call and say that Naruto and Sasuke were stronger during the War arc than during The Last or Boruto? I mean, Naruto’s lost his Six Paths Senjutsu Chakra, and Sasuke's become a cripple… Personally, no, I don’t think it’s quite that simple. For starters, while Naruto may have lost much of his Six Paths Senjutsu Chakra, it’s made clear in Shikamaru Hiden that he still has some of that power by virtue of possessing the remnants of the Tailed Beasts’ chakra, in addition to the complete Kurama. Remember that even Obito, who had the Ten Tails completely extracted from him, possessed enough leftover Six Paths Chakra
So there you have it, second time's the charm; I know you didn't read it, but for those who want to pretend they did, I'd be happy if you shared your thoughts and opinions.

… well, that’s another example. More importantly than that, though, it’s important to remember that as of VOTE 2, Naruto hadn’t even been a Perfect Jinchuriki for a day, and Sasuke hadn’t had his Rinnegan for more than a couple of hours. While they may be rusty, it’s undeniable that Naruto and Sasuke have had many years to develop their abilities as a Jinchuriki and a Rinnegan user respectively, and it really shows; particularly in The Last for Naruto, and in Boruto/Gaiden for Sasuke. I think there's still plenty of room for debate on when exactly Naruto and Sasuke reached their peak, as unfulfilling of an answer as that is.So there you have it, second time's the charm; I know you didn't read it, but for those who want to pretend they did, I'd be happy if you shared your thoughts and opinions.
