Explain the Hashirama cells!?

Did Kabuto transplanted the Hashirama cells into Madara? (Before Making Madara Edo Tensei)

Or Did Madara absorb the Hashirama cells, to prolong his maniacal life? (Which he used to live in a cave forever, waiting for an Uchiha to pop in [Obito]) (So he can brainwash the person, making the person conspire against the whole ninja world, which he did, Tobi)

For I am getting confused now! (reading all these threads.)

Madara transplanted the cells into himself after his fight with Hashirama, but did not gain the Rinnegan until his lifespan came close to an end. However, Kabuto modified Madara's Edo Tensei so that he would be resurrected as the man in his prime with the powers (Rinnegan) he gained as an old man. Kabuto said his Edo Tensei was a 'special version' and that he had been "completed beyond what [he] was in his prime".
