A new project. Nothing to do with Naruto, and it's a different type of fanfic than I usually write. For one, it doesn't take place in the past like most of my fanfics. And second, it goes from the person I'm writing about's point of view. So it's a new type of thing in whole, bear with me guys XD.
The middle of the Sahara, it was about as forgiving a place as you’d expect it to be. Yeah, it’s that bad. Deadly humid weather 24/8 (hey, I’m delusional here, you’d think there were 8 days too if you were here), besides those freezing cold nights, the sun seems like it’s trying to give you a hug, vultures circling above as if they’re just waiting for you to pass out so they can eat you away. My skin was practically melting from the heat, and sweat ran down my face. Not the ideal place for a news channel to do a report in if you ask me, but hey, that’s America for you isn’t it? And it’s even funnier the day that they chose to do it. I’m not the superstitious type, but whose idea was it to plan a major even such as announcing a new material found in earth on Friday 13th? Not mine, that’s for sure.
See, we do regular mining here; Africa and Antarctica are two of the few places left that we haven’t completely searched. And we stumbled upon this new material. There’s no real name for it yet, there’s just a bunch of random numbers and letters put together, typical scientists. Well anyway, the materials crazy hot, we thought it was just because of being basically on top of the equator, but they’re saying that it’s too hot to directly touch for a millisecond, the only explanation for something like that is being extremely close to the core of the earth, so they’ve assumed that something’s pushing it up, onto the earth’s surface. If you ask me, they shouldn’t mess with it, but I’ve never really been listened too, but who would listen to a miner? All we do is work our butts off, nothing important enough to give us an opinion right?
Interrupting my thoughts, the cameras started rolling and the reporter started to talk, “Sarah Sullivan here on Friday, October 13th in the year of 2073, we will be taking a look at a new mineral found. The mineral has unknown temperatures, although we do know that the mineral has deadly properties, one miner had touched it, and his skin immediately began to disintegrate, and his appearance was drastically altered. Today, we are determined to discover more about this mineral by investigating where the miners behind me may have found the main source.”
I watched the camera move towards us and figured that I should look like I’m working, even though most of the miners quit before we even started, the news reporter looked quite surprised when she turned the camera and saw seven people, including me.
One of the miners started jabbing his arm into the dirt. See, they attached the drill to your arms; it was literally an extension of your arm, an annoying extension that made the bones in your arms feel like they were lying on an earthquake. Anyway, he kept jamming the drill into the dirt, while complaining and saying things like: “I can’t drill!” and “What the heck’s with this thing!?”
“Then dig around it dumb—” before I could swear, I was pushed by a news reporter. Those guys are so professional aren’t they?
The reporter locked her eyes on his digging space and brightened up when she saw part of a dark, dark stone.
Whipping around, she was facing the camera man within a quarter of a second, “Could this be the mineral that we were searching for?”
I held my tongue, trying not to make a comment about the whole “we” thing when all they were doing was holding us up. But I noticed something more important than that. While it did look like a mineral, or something of the sort, I got the weird feeling that it wasn’t. The mineral that we found before definitely looked like that, but it looked more like... a tooth? I couldn’t get a good view of it. But it wasn’t a stone, I was positive now. Why was I
positive?
Because the so called stone lunged out of the dirt and bit at the reporters face, and then seeped back into the sand.
The entire area was filled with shock, while the reporter started trying to back away, I notice something else... the air was... green...?
My eyes widened, he wasn’t biting at her, he was releasing a gas, “Poison!” I yelled out, “Ok everyone, just calmly—” everyone was already screaming.
That was a dumb move, yell poison and then tell everyone to be calm? Eh, I’m a miner; they won’t hold it against me.
I pulled my baseball cap over my mouth and nose, and after I knew where I was going, I covered my eyes as well, and tried to put my shoulders against my ears, anything that would stop the gas from getting into me. I kept running, I no longer knew where, nor did I care, until I was blasted back by a wave of sand.
I flew across the desert and skidded like a pebble thrown across the ocean, when I finally completely fell, I took my hand from my eyes. The gas was gone, the air looked normal, but in front of me, was some deformed figure. I know I said I was delusional, but the thing definitely had a twelve pack. Its legs resembled that of a horses, the thigh was muscular, after the knee, its calf was farther back than its thigh. Its arms looked the same as the legs. The hands and feet were clawed, and his... or its heel had a claw in the back. The creatures face was still shrouded in the sand.
The thing put up a quivering finger and hissed: “Human,” dragging out all of the words, and staring directly at me with it's dark, blood red eyes.
Like a dummy, I thought it was suitable to scream out: “Alien!” which seemed to offend it.
I’m on a roll with dumb stunts today.
The thin abruptly disappeared and reappeared behind Sullivan who tried to scream but his claw immediately went into her skin. My eyes had quite the workout trying to follow him, disappearing and reappearing while jabbing people with his claws. And then there was no one left but me.
Scrambling on the ground to get myself up, I pushed sand back as I tried to run away as fast as I could. I noticed the thing in front of me and tried to spin around it but was caught by a claw, not as badly as the others, but it definitely scratched me. But I kept running, my vision blurry, my legs suddenly faltered, and so did I.
I am Jonathen Colvina. And this is only the beginning of my tragic story. And if you are reading this, then you are one of the lucky ones. One of those who read because you want to, who read for joy. But this is reality for me.
Cold, bitter reality.
