The evolution of the God tree.
The god tree itself under goes Samsara. After the fruit was eaten, we all thought that the tree got angry and went on a rampage. But it didn’t. Why the downgrade in power if it wants revenge? The truth is, got reincarnated via the Nakra realm. The fat Juubi with sharp teeth and spiked protrusions definitely looks Hellish.
Notice how the Juubi actually takes 6 forms.These are 6 paths of reincarnation for the Juubi. They are slightly out of order with the Buddist depiction of Samsara, however, this is a manga so Kishi probably changed things up a bit.
To put simply, here are the 6 paths of evolution for the Juubi:
Shinju = Deva
Jubbi Jin=Human
2nd stage Juubi=Asura
1st stage Juubi= Nakura
Mazou=Preta
Bijuu= Animal
An interesting pattern I noticed is that each path also has a characteristic of the next next path below it. It makes sense, those more evolved still retain some primitive traits from their earlier forms.
The Bijuu the animal path and that is self explanatory. Notice that they have some human characteristics such as talkative personalities.
The Mazou is the Preta because it is essentially a hungry ghost. It is a ghost because it is dead, it is only a shell. It is hungry because it feeds off of the Bijuu. Notice it has a god like ability to hold souls and is always in a position of prayer. It prays on a Lotus like a Hindu god.
Next, the 1st stage Juubi is the Nakura. It is hellish looking and has sharp teeth, indicating malevolence. Notice that it has an animal characteristic in the sense that it crawls and is fat, looking lazy.
The 2nd stage Juubi is the Asura. It is titanic in size and it’s power is overwhelming. It has several faces, a defining feature of the Asuras. Notice that it has a characteristic of Preta. At first, its anorexic, a preta trait since they are always hungry. The giant bulb on its back represents the giant stomachs that Pretas usually have.
The Juubi Jin is clearly the human path of the Juubi. It is a human, with a human mind. Notice that Obito as the Juubi Jin has the characteristic of the Nakura path. Interesting, in Hagaromo’s case, it’s reversed since he has the characteristic of the Deva Path. I will talk about that more later.
Finally, the Shinju is the God path. It is the beginning and the end. It created life and has the power to end it. Notice it has certain characteristic of the Asura path, an important one is wrath. The tree became enraged when Kayuga ate the fruit.
How fitting it is, to have the circle completed in this way, from plant to animal and then from animal to plant.
As to why Hagaromo broke the pattern by not exhibiting a Nakra characteristic, the next next one below it, is that humans, as we know are central to religion and always have free will. Obito chose to destroy, so he became the devil, Hagaromo chose to create, so he became a god.
As to why the God Tree became enraged when fruit was eaten? I don’t know. I think there might be two sides of a coin. Benelovence and Malevolence. The tree back then was the side of Benevolence. When humans were waring, Kayuga sought to end violence with even more violence. The fruit was a test for humanitie's most benevolent. If even they fail, then the Tree will be enraged at this solution. The tree was enraged but yet needed to reincarnate it’s self to the evil form to exact pushinment. This is because even though that side of the Shinjuu was enraged, it was still the good side, it needed to be reborn as evil as evil is necessary to exact humanities compete destruction. Hence, it was reborn, starting with the evil’s form’s larval state, the Narka( i.e fat Juubi), which would further evolve through 4 upper states, which are evil on this side of the coin. Hagaromo was unable to stop this evil so he pushed the Juubi two levels below via COAT. These paths, being below the larval state are neither evil nor good. They either are animals or a mindless ghost. However, they can be corrupted over time, just like how Kurama became hate filled.
Because of this, I believe that there is an Outer Path.
Outer Path: The Divine Will of the Shinju:To create or destroy. The outer path is said to control life and death. Through the Shinju's divine will, life was created. Now, also through it's Divine Will, it intends to destroy life.
This is the outer path as it is a will that is outside of the 6 paths and influences all of those paths externally. That is why Nakra to Deva is malevolent. Even the paths that Hagaromo created, Animal(i.e Bijuu) and Preta( i.e Mazou) became malevolent over time, indirectly though. In the Bijuu's case, they became more hate filled as a byproduct of humanities' selfishness( trapping the Bijuu for war weapons), of course is due to the Shinju's curse for misusing the fruit.
This path being "Outer" does not change when the other paths change. Divine will is not so easily broken through mere physical evolution. But through something more fundamental.
Now you may say, "then why wasn't Hagaromo affected by the negative will of the Shinju?"
I would say he did. Being resilient though, he didn't become evil. But he did create the tools for more violence( i.e Ninjutsu). He probably was losing some hope in the ideal of true peace so he gave instructions for the Infinite Tsukuyomi as a last measure just in case Humanity didn't get it's act together. So yes, even Hagaromo was also influenced by the Divine Will of the Shinju.
In conclusion: the 6 physical forms of the Shinju comprise the 6 paths and the Outer Path is the Shinju's Divine Will: to create or destroy .
