You mean Indra was mad at him right? Ashura was the younger brother.
We'll we don't know what happened to his brother for all we the sage could've killed him after they sealed their mother than took the ten tails for himself.
First born sons usually follow in the foot steps of their father youngers ones usually does the rebelling or choosing another path, i personally believe he was following in his fathers foot steps, thats why Ashura was so mad at him for picking the younger brother and then went on to fight him.
Just think about it if he was so talented from a young age and the oldest his father would have naturally spent a lot of time with him nurturing that talent and would have been the beginning of his ideology. It was later on in life when the sage thought that the younger brothers way was right and choose him as the successor
As of late, I've been hearing a lot of rumors about Hagoromo being the real mastermind behind all of this and him turning evil.
Hagoromo being the final villain would be even worse than Kaguya in my opinion. Ever since the introduction of the Rinnegan, he was mythologized as a benevolent man who spread peace and order throughout the world.
-He invented Ninshu and tried to connect everyone via chakra instead of using it as a weapon.
-He chose Ashura, who believed in peace through love instead of Indra who believed in power.
-The Bijuu speak about him like he's a saint and compared him to Naruto.
The biggest reason
-He also could have become God of the world after Hamura died since no one at the time would have the power to challenge him and he was jinchuriki of the Juubi.
Instead of dominating the world and becoming immortal, he bequeathed his power to Ashura.
So him turning out to be evil would make absolutely no sense.
