Kishimoto slyly retconned Hiruzen's hype when he had Kabuto state that Hashirama's power was doubted and fairytale-like. By doing this, he didn't necessarily make Sarutobi weaker, but rather, made Shodai seem stronger than what part I implied - successfully making the 1st more central to the current plot and its power levels. Although incredibly obvious, it was still a well done retcon on Kishi's part.
