I was thinking today that it's odd the anime is still releasing fillers. So I decided to look at the numbers.

As most of you probably know, the fillers are ending on July 18th with episode 321. At that point, 81 chapters of content will separate the anime and manga.

You may be thinking, "So what. Each episode covers a lot of chapters."

Yeah, that's what I had previously thought too. However the actual average number of chapters per episode may surprise you. According to (a website NB won't let me link), Naruto: Shippuden, from its start, has only covered an average of about 1.5 chapters per episode. This only accounts for those that are canon, in case you thought fillers were bringing down the average.

That means when canon episodes are airing the anime only gains half a chapter on the manga each week.

Half a chapter.

And here's the shocking part: The manga could release about 162 chapters, and run for about four years, before the anime caught up. And that's assuming not a single filler episode will ever release again.

Masashi Kishimoto on the end of Naruto, from an sometime before July 21, 2012.

Nishio-san, who takes care of the character designs for the anime, also asked me for how long the story would continue and I answered “About one year and a half”. But it seems like it will take longer than that.

It's been about a year since he said that. So the manga evidently has about 6 months left. That also seems to coincide with the recent chapters, where it genuinely seems that the plot is at its climax. He does go on to say it may take longer, but after subtracting out the 6 months, there's still 42 left over from the time it would take the anime to catch up.

So what does this mean, you ask? Here are some possibilities:

A. I screwed up my math or got incorrect information. After all, this sounds completely ludicrous.

B. The anime will start covering a lot more chapters per episode, suddenly, out of the blue.

C. The people behind the anime adaption are money-grubbing wh*res.

D. The people behind the anime adaption have insider information, from Kishimoto himself, that a third Naruto series is being planned. And, thus, they are creating a gap between the anime and manga in order to air the new series without delay.

Option D. sounds familiar, doesn't it? That's because the original series aired fillers for two years, creating a manga gap of about 80-100 chapters. And if shippuden airs more fillers to maintain that same manga gap, then maybe this statistic would also stay the same: Naruto part 1, and currently part 2, both sit at almost exactly 40% filler. The difference between them is less than one percent.

Seeing these numbers, I'm not sure what your perspective will be. To me, though, they strongly hint at a third series. Naruto: Akkipuden, perhaps?

Interesting... I guess we'll see eventually. Although i doubt there will be a manga after this series is over. If it continues, it will be solely anime.

Very interesting... But there's still WAY more to cover than just 6 months and that "take longer" comment by Kishimoto is proof.

I can't see them doing anything other than a spin-off at this point. I mean Naruto and Sasuke are
in the top 10 power-wise, who can really eff with them now?

The next villian would have to be at DBZ power levels which would ruin Naruto.

I think it would work because Naruto has wanted to become Hokage since chapter one. At the moment, I don't see him as being intelligent or mature enough for the role. But after another 2-3 year timeskip he might be ready. I think it would be interesting to see how he does as Hokage.

Yeaaaaaaaaa, I remember watching filler after filler waiting for the new episodes to come out. Eventually I gave up and missed all of shippuden. Well the episodes at least. And that was before I started following the manga.

But storywise, it seems unlikely.. The 10 tails is the strongest antagonist to ever exist in the narutoverse, and we knew this before we thought it could be revived. After it's defeated then what? I personally don't think Kishi could top that well enough to make another series.

Maybe a timeskip could work for an arc but definitely not a series.

I would love to see a third series based around Naruto's kids. I'm sure Kishi could come up with a villain that'd last long enough to make the series worthwhile.

(P.S. I'm not saying that Naruto won't achieve ultimate peace. What I am saying is that human nature leaves room for the potential to have a "small-scale" villain)

i really cant understand how the story will go after this war. i mean, Naruto becoming hokage would have 3yrs timespan during which he would mature and gain the qualities for a hokage. are htwe jinchuurikis again going to return to the respective villages/ i odnt know what will happe but one thing is sure: Naruto should become hokage as per plot.
