But killing off characters every once in a while is good for business and ratings.

That's why Game of Thrones do it all the time and their ratings and viewership is off the charts.

If anything, his editor would encourage it.

I would'nt exactly say Jiraiya was past his prime,he was still strong enough to take out half the Pains and forced Itachi and Kisame to retreat.OT:Sakura won't be killed off anytime soon.

I go by what they say inthe manga. The sannin to me and others are stronger that what they themselves considered to be their prime. As their prime selves did not have such abilities. Which makes me wonder what characters actually mean when they say it based on the definition of it we know.

Maybe the sannin were actually indeed better than what we think without these power ups, maybe they had other things. Who knows.
