I've heard Kishi had a lot of other plans with the war that got off'd by the editors because they would have been 'too violent', killing off other characters besides Neji.

But then I look at One Piece and I think that's crazy. I'm not sure if he's getting a VIP pass for the mulla he's making them, or his commitment or what, but... anybody else ever surprised with the fan service Oda can get away with in Shonen, that's supposed to be for all ages (I believe)?

Or is it just me?

And I mean in regards to fan service, not violence.

Just you I guess. I mean you can say that with other shounen titles like for example HxH or Toriko. Toriko has some weird stuff and over the top violence. HxH is more violent than OP.

There are things in One Piece manga been canceled in the process of animation. Even the manga itself, Oda been requested by an editor. Something about Robin when she was caught by dwarfs.

OP isn't that violet when it comes to actual fighting, but the history of OP verse is pretty gruesome as well.

What do you mean by fan service? I mean no matter how you look at it, it's not that surprising since I'm sure there's other shonen titles out there with more surprising/questionable stuff out there.

The anime kinda balanced out the blood shed with the lack of bloodshed.

OT in Toriko getting half of urself blown off is part and parcel of the day

HunterxHunter was(is?) shonen. I think that's the furthest I've seen the boundaries pushed for r-rated content.

The Japanese have a very different view of what is appropriate for younger readers, a perfect example is Fairy Tail, the manga targets a family friendly audience and there is no end to the fan service.

No, it's just Kishi at the beginning didn't have the tendency to give such fanservice as he thought he might not be that good (remember what he said during one of those interviews?) despite that he really fond of them like any other mangakas. Till the end he had gotten used to his own style, with a few exception of Tsunade and such. Meanwhile, Oda since long had been giving fanservice, whether he realised it or not. For example, Nami showed her naked body to Luffy and Usopp on Going Merry. And so on. After TS, the fanservice is piling up I guess. Probably because the fans are mostly adults. Kids nowadays are more into anime like... like SAO or Nisekoi. I think.

Editors rarely censored fanservice, but heavy violence was out of question in shounen.

Eh...There is plenty of fanservice and sexist jokes in OP but Oda knows how to insert them and usually stops before it would become annoying and he does have a stories to tell. There are plenty of mangas that thrive on fanservice alone.

The mangka which gave me weirdest panel would still be Togashi. Click on it at your own risk.

If you read the caption it makes it less weird :p. The deformity of that creature is used to show the nature of the father.
