It doesn't have to be canon to Naruto. Have you not read the first few pages of the new Manga? Boruto specifically emphasized that this was his story, not Naruto's. This is a completely separate things from Naruto, so you shouldn't be wandering if something is canon to the Naruto series, you should be wandering if it is canon to the Boruto series.
