1. His abilities were original and a breath of fresh air in a manga that had been rapidly growing dull at the time. Kishimoto had never gone very deep into genjutsu aside from Itachi, Tayuya's flute, and Shima/Fukasaku's frog song, so Gengetsu's mirage genjutsu was rather innovative. Also, Jōki bōi. Enough said.
2. His personality was also very interesting. I mean, he's the Trollkage. The guy was effortlessly spanking Gaara's company while telling them how his genjutsu worked. He was also laughing and cracking jokes while battling Gaara, so there's that.
3. He nearly soloed Gaara and Ōnoki (ok, bit of an overstatement, but Jōki bōi was overwhelming them before Gaara used his father's dust)
4. His dynamic and interaction with Gaara was rather entertaining. He was accurate when he called Gaara the golden egg amongst the kage.
Meanwhile, Sakura spent the entire manga chasing Sasuke when the latter never gave her a reason to like him other thsn his looks, which is rather superficial. She let her emotions severely cloud her mind in respect to Sasuke's status as a rogue shinobi; he should have been killed immediately like Kakashi and Tsunade previously stated. Not only that, Sasuke put her ass in a genjutsu, and the only reason he came back down to earth was because Naruto stalemated him. After all of that Sakura still had feelings for that clown. I've never seen a main character with such little development. She and Hinata are practically interchangeable; both of their characters revolve around one person. It's really sad that an Edo Tensei summoning was infinitely more interesting than a main character who had much, much, much more panel time.
