Because Minato and Itachi are usually compared. In a fight Itachi wins, but as a person he is a failure.

The OP is saying if Naruto was meant to be the savior of the planet, why is Minato at the forefront of this battle and taking the panel time to stop Obito?

Because he didn't know a feisty snake would resurrect him to do so. He was 100% riding on the idea that Naruto would somehow find a way to stop the terror from continuing to ensue.

But then not having Minato dieing would make Naruto die and not be the savior, no?

kishimoto hype minato as unbeatable that he is having a hard time making how to remove minato from defeating every character in 1 panel. so dont blame kishimoto for a crappy plot to kill minato atleast he tried his best to give you an interesting manga without minato who will 1 paneling every character

well, you're right in a way because Minato was fully capable of killing Obito on the spot, which would have prevented a lot of bother.

on the other hand, Minato had to save the village from the kyuubi, and maintain the jinchuuriki balance. So I think he weighed finishing off Obito vs saving konoha, and that choice was made easier when he realised that Naruto is the child of prophecy. So whether Naruto succeeds or not determines if Minato's plan made sense I suppose.

Personally if I were in Minato's shoes I would have let the kyuubi go and retreive it later, and in the meantime build Naruto up to be a boss. Naruto would still have that amazing uzumaki chakra pool, and much better chakra control without the kyuubi messing it up. with his dad's analytical intelligence, his own amazing strategies, and access to all minato knows and knowledge select to the hokage, Naruto would still be unstoppable. imagine him with ftg and sage mode frog taka, he would be killing opponents with mere punches.

Jiraiya and Itachi also had better options imo.

so seems like he just feels the need to nerfe them (making Itachi sick) or kill them (Minato suicide and also Nagato suicide after turning good) instead of letting them roaming free making the villains look like fodders xD
