Hi guys. So I just finished my English exams today, and I had to write a short story. I was wondering if you could read it and tell me how it is. Beforehand, I would like to say that I wrote it in about one hour and thirty minutes, and I did not proof read it. You can comment on the source material as well, but the most important part is how well it is written. Oh, and the subject was predetermined, so I had to make up something about the title.
Thanks to any who reads it and comments.
Lovely Cover, Lousy Book
There once was a boy named Howard. He was a normal boy, and kind to his parents. He lived in London, England. Howard was always bullied because he didn’t get to wear fancy clothes like the others in his school, and his looks weren’t something that was desired by many, if any at all. After a while, things escalated at his school, with him getting beat up regularly. But he did have one loyal friend named Sarah. This was when he was 15.
The summer holidays came around, and without Howard even noticing it, he had sprouted two inches during the summer and had become more handsome. Plus his mother had bought him a new wardrobe! This worked as a motivator of sorts for him. He wanted to see the faces of everyone who mocked and bullied him all the previous years, to see if they would continue their schoolyard terror, just stop or possibly even cower in fear of his new physique and appearance, he thought to himself arrogantly.
The first day of school came along. Instead of all the things that he had considered would happen, people started talking to him instead. This took Howard by surprise. His transformation hadn’t completely left behind the shyness in him, but it didn’t take long for him to get used to it.
When the day was over, he walked through the halls of his school. As he was walking out of the main door, he passed by Sarah. She hadn’t had any drastic changes over the summer. She still had her red hair, but she had shortened it. She hadn’t grown any taller either, and still stood at approximately 165 centimeters. Her figure was quite normal, as was her face, except that she had some distinct freckles across her nose and under her eyes. “Hi! How’s your summer been?”, she said. “Sarah!”, he said. “My summer’s been wonderful, as you might see. How was yours?”. She looked at Howard happily and said “My summer’s been okay, I guess.”. Her eyes wandered to the floor, with a hint of excitement to her. “So, do you maybe wanna hang out?” She asked Howard. As he was about to reply, a group of guys called out to him and told him to come join them. “Sorry, maybe another time”, he said as he ran towards them. Sarah was saddened by this, but she found solace in Howard having new friends.
As the months flew by, Howard built up more and more distance between him and Sarah. With his newfound popularity, Howard steered clear of her, since she was considered a loser.
One day around Christmas time, he ran into Sarah at the store. They greeted each other, with awkward silence ensuing. “So… What you doing during the holidays?”, Howard asked uncomfortably and forced. “Same old, same old. Be with the family. And you?”, she said with the same kind smile she has always given him. “Haven’t made any specific plans.”, he said. He glanced her for a bit, then said “Listen, I have a party tonight. Why don’t you come? It would be fun to catch up.”. Sarah’s whole face brightened, but she tried to play it cool. “Sure…”, she said, “I’ll be there around 8 o’clock.” They parted ways at the store, both with smiles on their faces. One seemed rather mischievous.
Sarah arrived at the party when she said she would, on the dot. She arrived to a jam packed house layered with smoke in the air,a sticky floor, and drunk and silly teenagers. “So this is how a real party looks like”, she thought to herself. It was extremely exciting for her to be there, but it was also nerve wrecking, being in this big a crowd, in such tight spaces, knowing no one except for the host. She couldn’t possibly know that things would get worse. Howard had set in motion a plan to haze Sarah, inviting her only so that his friends would have a verbal punching bag of sorts. Howard had shared many secrets about her from their times together, dishing out her troubles with her family, her own personal problems, generally things that should remain among friends and family only.
Sarah walked right into this trap, never once considering that Howard would do something like this. Why would she? As she walked by the steps to the 2nd floor, the first joke came at her as a girl she passed by said something that she couldn’t possibly know of. It was like a fleeting moment. She didn’t quite comprehend what had happened. There was no way she could have heard that, so she just brushed it off. She soon realized that it wasn’t in her imagination as more of her own secrets were thrown at her.
Eventually she found Howard and asked what the hell was going on, why people knew all of this stuff. “Well, I told them of course.”, he said with a smile that oozed of hideousness and cruelty. “W-…Why would you do that?!”, she screamed as her face started to become a gentle red with teary eyes. Giving off a look of superiority, Howard said “Because you’re a loser, and losers serve as our fodder.”. Sarah was at a loss for words, there was nothing left to say. The person she held dearest had become a literal shadow of himself, only darkness, she thought to herself. Sarah left as quietly as possible. As she was outside the house, Howard and several of his friends stood on his balcony, laughing at her, calling her names.
She cried herself to sleep that night. The morning after, she replayed the the previous night in her mind over and over. She still couldn’t believe it. But Sarah was not the person that would take something like this lightly. She contemplated taking revenge, but she had no idea how she would do it, and do it towards a dear friend nonetheless. She used the holiday to mull it over. Her plan was decided.
As the semester started up again, Sarah immediately searched for Howard. She found him during the lunch break. He was sitting at a table with several people who had bullied her. “Howard, can I talk to you in private?”, she said with a stern face. “Whatever you want to say to me, you can say in front of the guys.”, he said as he gazed confidently at his friends. Sarah’s expression did not change. “I want you to apologize for what you did. Right here, in front of your precious friends.”. “Are you serious?! You must be crazy”, he said laughing. “Oh, I’m very serious. ‘Cause if you don’t, you’ll get what you so deserve.” She said with a little smirk. Howard looked slightly nervous, but he needed to keep his cool and composure among his friends, then he said “Give me your best shot, you reject.”, with a poor attempt to show confidence. Sarah’s lips stretched out and her teeth showed. It was weird she thought, that this person has made her smile this big for two completely opposite reasons. “Guess there’s a reason why people say love and hate are almost the same”, she thought to herself as she said to Howard, “Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”. She walked away calmly.
At the end of the day, the students were putting back their stuff in their lockers. Sarah had placed one very unflattering and embarrassing picture of Howard from a few years ago in every single locker throughout the school. Now everybody was laughing uncontrollably at Howard, as he saw his popularity quickly fade. Status quo had been set again it seems. Sarah left the school with her smile still intact.
The End
