I think he’s questioning whether what he was told is true at this point(not about his creation, but his purpose) if boruto was told to be this purpose, then it’s boruto that he has to go against to prove it true.

How would he learn his purpose following them?

I think instead of learning his purpose which he was already given he's questioning what he is and what it means. I guess pretty much questioning if he has free will if he can be a normal person. I think that's the dilemma mitsuki is trying to work through.
