I always expect the swing of the sword coming from the tip of the sword. Like when Madara slashes downward against the Kage's and or Harashima no shockwave is created. So however it is swing shouldn't matter.

They were choped down because stabilizing on Kyuubi helped him produce a secondary weapon. The whole point was to stop the slash from getting a direct hit, Sasuke can do whatever he wants right after. Same reply as above and senjutsu plays a role.
