When it borrows it's core concepts from said literature it's a fair assessment. Just because you dislike the execution doesn't negate the influence. It's a modern day production with Shakespearean roots, that focuses more on the contemporary.

Ergo, it being generic. As if empire is the first production to use Shakespearean themes. It's influence doesn't denote its quality. The show, for me, is tasteless and unrefined not to mention unoriginal. A show based on the music industry? The music industry is an asinine field as it is.
