Firstly both have eternal mangekyou sharingan
They are both very strong characters due to phenomenal justu.
I would have to say Itachi because he has IZANAMI, AMETARASU AND HE HAS THE POWER TO BREAK EDO TENSEI. I would also have to say Itachi because his Totsuka blade has phenomenal power. Youre strong Madara, but you have to lose sometimes.

i would say itachi...they still have not show a fight where itachi is serious...and with the sword and shield..he would do fine...the only thing madara in my mind have over him is the Rinnegan and he already defeated pain...someone born with those eyes...so itachi wins..he was praised as one of the best to ever come from that clan....

itachi with his brains can hold madara for as long as a wood clone of madara gets exhausted after that you can see you dear itachi get annihilated

he didnt defeat pain he got jumped and a chibaku tensei kills itachi and mokuton forest will swallow a susanoo
