I don't think they "controlled" demons, just summoned them for extra power use/reverse sealing for a short period of time. But they are indeed a bad ass clan

Wait, wouldn't that mean that not only Minato and Hiruzen were able to use the Dead Demon Seal? But possibly all the other Uzumaki's as well? OT: I agree Proof, you're threads have always been easy to understand and I liked this one especially because you got right to the point and explained it well. Good thread.

Brilliant post once again DrProof. It seems plausible, if not very likely, that those masks are used with other seals. Perhaps one day there will be some more light shed onto them; until then, keep churning out such great posts. ^_^

Your first conclusion is very interesting, I wonder about just how many different sealing techniques the Uzumaki had. Why did they need so many, what do they all do? It would be very interesting to see how they're all different from each other and what each of their specific uses were, if your theory is correct.

i like your thread a lot, very interesting i was also thinking what the masks could do and your thread on it put me at ease cause i was heading the same direction with what you wrote but you completed it haha, when i say heading that direction i mean like reversal wise on the masks.

Why there are so many I don't know, maybe there is a limit to what even a shinigami can hold in it's stomach? I found the whole mask bit not explained that well, like why does it automatically come forth once you put on a mask? And how did Oro know which one was the one he was looking for? Could other masks be holding past shinobi from centuries ago? Or even the sons or a part of SO6P himself?

Another thing that I thought was a little odd was how did Oro move enough to cut his stomach, and why did the shinigami copy Oro when he did this? I always thought the shinigami was in control of what was going on, not the other way around.

also a side note, for them shinigami masks if they all were for the purpose for reversal sealing of some sort maybe all maybe some whatever, my point is i would like to think that all those masks have the cost of self sacrifice for the dealing of the Reaper. not so much body parts
so i'm sure someone already mentioned this heh but, i'm sure whoever knew about the Uzamaki and there Shinigami Masks or attempted to do anything with any of the masks they died trying, but no one up until orochimaru discovered "Immortality" to be able to sacrifice ones self and survive so maybe that could be why it was out casted in the outskirts of the Leaf Village and made it out to look like a shrine of just masks

You may be right. Hopefully we'll find out for sure. Or Kishi may never mention them again, only time will tell. I think this is a foreshadowing of the coming arc which hopefully sheds some light on the Uzumaki Clan, and possibly those masks as well

The specific shinigami that houses the four hokages, the other shinigamis could contain other souls, so he needed to choose the face of the one that housed them

The Uzumaki have been shown to have significant life force (Kushina being the only known being to survive a tailed beast extraction). Nagato was able to perform 3 grand scale Jutsu in a short time (Shinra Tensei: Large Scale, Chibaku Tensei, and Rinne Tensei). We've also seen the damage Naruto takes and gets back up from throughout the manga.

I could imagine that with such extended life energy, perhaps the Uzumaki clan members traded off years/decades of life in order to perform such techniques. Where the Uzumaki had the extended life energy to survive such brutal techniques, regular human bodies would be pushed against their limits causing bringing death. The Uzumaki members being to survive such heinous ordeals added to the sense that the Uzumaki were a bit "savage or rough". Uzumaki members probably used the different masks to more efficiently perform some of the various high scale reverse seals or seals that involved any unknown quantity of demons as you suggested!

I figured, as I have seen Death Note and a little of Bleach. But all the mask's looked exactly like the only shinigami we've seen. What I mainly want explained is how Oro got the shinigami to cut up it's stomach, a simple mask allow you to spawn a specific shinigami and control it? I might be over thinking it but it's random to me that just because Oro cut open his stomach the shinigami needed to. I'm sure Kishi will come up with some sort of explaination, be it vague or not.

I think each mask is dependent upon the shinigami it summons, hence, there is more than one shinigami in accordance to japanese folklore

I'm sorry Dr. Proof but I am lead to believe that your hypothesis is incorrect.

Notice the dilapidated building with the masks clearly hanging on the wall in the open? If all 26 masks were indeed able to reverse some sealing or summon demons either a) the masks would have been stolen over time or b) they would've been protected or sealed.

Besides your eloquently stated theory, the only other plausible explanation is that this is a simple case of hiding in plain sight. The other masks were there to help the one powerful mask go undetected.
