That could be said for virtually any villain in the series. They all had troublesome lives, which lead them to do things "for the greater good".

Orochimaru never did anything for anyone but himself. Would he have shared his immortality? I think not.

He did cruel things out of ambition and not from a sense of duty. He is rotten to the core.
