In my country as in most of the contries of the world it´s really easy to get a driver's licence you just need to take a very simple exam that almost anyone can pass , but in my opinion passing an exam doesnt make you a good driver, a good driver is not the one who drives well his car, a good driver is the one who knows the regulations and follows them, a good driver is the one who knows he's not the only one driving therefore if he does something stupid he should know he's putting other people in danger, a good driver should know the pedestrian has preference over the people driving, a good driver doesnt take calls, puts up make up, races against other cars, lets the steering wheel go.

In my honest opinion even though having a drivers lisence is considered as a right to every citizen, this right should be earned because there are so much idiots driving and putting people in danger because of their behavior and they think they are the kings of the road when doing those stupid things, i think the filters to get a drivers licence should be toughter and they shouldnt only consider the knowledge but also the behavior kind of like a probing time and if he doesnt prove to be a responsible driver the drivers licence should be cancel.
So in my opinion the drivers licence should be considered as a priviledge not a right because there are so much people who misuse this so called right.
After all big cities like the one i live in dont need more people in their own cars making huge trafic jams, big cities need stronger and better public transportation systems, in a big city the time you save driving your car instead of taking the subway, bus whatever is spent trying to find a parking spot.

It's a privilege of course. I consider a good driver to be someone whose skill and attention can avoid a potentially bad situation caused by poor driving conditions or by someone else's mistake.

In Australia it takes 3 years or more depending on you as a driver to get your full license.

Step. 1. Computer exam. Obtain Learners (80km speed limit) 120 hours of driving must be logged into the booklet 20 of those hours must be night driving.

Step 2. Driving test obtain Provisional 1 license (90km speed limit) 1 year before going onto next step.

Step 3. Computer exam. Obtain Provisional 2 license (100km limit) 2 years before going onto next step.

Step 4. Computet exam. Obtain full license.

I guess I'm a bad driver cause I take calls (even though texting is worse cause you have to look down at your phone...which I don't do...instead : "hey Siri!"
Siri:"Yes pimp daddy riding on a suger cane mustang, driving through wal-mart?"
Me: "text Mad booty meat"
Siri: "what would you like to say?"
Me: " Love you babe, coming home from work want to invite my mom for dinner?"
Siri:"would you like me to send that"
Me: " No!! Damn it Siri clean your mic"
Siri: "what would you like to say?"
Me: "love you babe, coming home from work want to roleplay?"
Siri: ...
Me: "send!!")

Anyways you just need to move out of that big city.
Even if you replace all the "bad" drivers, you're still going to get traffic jams.

You must be in Sydney then? Regardless, all of us bullshitted the hours we did in our log book while we were on our L plates. XD
OT: It's a privilege of course.

I'm 26 - The L period before the 120 hours was i think only 60 hours of driving. So yeah, i didn't have to deal with all that new bullsh*t that's been implemented.

in France it goes like this:

lessons about what we call the road code were you learn about all the rules and symbols a driver need before even open a car's door (10h minimum, most people need around 20h, very expensive)

after it's done, you will have to wait until the driving school is ok to let you pass an exam to be sure you know and understood everything (the exam is not for free either, very few people succeed in just 1 try and every time you fail, you must take more lessons again).

when you succeed with the theory, you have 1 year to take driving lessons at the same school (minimum 20h but most people need 30h or more) and again when the school is ok, they will let you pass another exam called the driving licence test (again not for free)

35min exam where everything you do and say counts (theory and practise), it's very rare to succeed in 1 try most people need 2 or more (you pay every time you try and you cannot pass the test more than once a month).

after all this if you have the paper for the theory + the paper for the practise = you can finally ask for the final licence (which is not free of course lol) and temporary Lol

you will have 3 years and 6 pts on your licence to start with, during this period you must:

  • drive for 3000km to be sure you will know how to drive in every season (you can also take special training for driving in the snow if you are a bit afraid of it).
  • not lose more than 3 pts in your licence or you will have to take a special stage (not for free lol) where you will re gain 1 pts/year only!!!
  • put a big red sticker in your car so the other drivers will know you have a temporary licence, this also means you cannot borrow someone else car because the insurance is way more expensive for a young driver of course!!!

if everything is ok after this 3 years period, you can finally ask for your definitive licence and it will have 12 pts.

if you lose all your points, you lose the licence and you must start it all other again in the worse case or just take again lessons meaning more money away from your pocket (theory and practise).

you can start at 16 for the theory but only with a parent and if they have a perfect licence with 12 pts + a car that allows special equipments.
you cannot pass the driving test before 18 so it's pretty rare for people to start at 16 and many cars don't receive the agreement.

driving schools are super expensive (1800/2000 euros for the simple minimal pack + 1 try for each exam/test) but they have everything so...

you will need around a year or more to do everything because the people in charge of the official driving test are available only once a month and only for X students (during the test, one examiner will be in charge of 3 students only and they will take less than 30 students/month most of the time but even less during school holidays).

also it's a fact that they won't give you the licence in these peculiar cases even if they don't say anything about it:
  • before summer and winter holidays, they don't want young drivers on the road
  • for the first try except in very very rare case (30 students only 5 or maybe 7 will have it in one try)
  • if you are too confident or too shy
  • if you don't check the car before opening the door and check everything before starting to drive (like if you don't check the gasoline level, it's already over for you and the examiner will never ask you to do it btw)

doesn't mean people are better than somewhere else, most drivers forgot everything starting by the most basic rules the moment they have their definitive licence and let's not talk about how dangerous it is with olders still being allowed to drive when the first time they took the theory exam (which evolved a lot and some new rules were created of course ) was 60 years ago :Omg:

Looking at above posts, the UK is super easy.

You can (and I did) complete the tests and be driving within three months. I was 17 years and 3 months old when I started learning, and 17 years and 6 months old when I was holding my driving license.

Yes driving is a privilege. But no matter how hard it is to get a driver's license it doesn't always produce a good driver. Technology and auto manufactures these days, make it so easy to distract a driver while driving. Cars with wifi. Cars with connection to the drivers phone or tablet so they can use the cars onscreen display.

Not only that, but in some places the car you drive is a show of status. So some people get a car that is too much car for them. And in other places the rims (wheels) you have. Which results in the donks with wide diameter rims (so wide that car has to be lifted in order for them to fit) with low profile tires. Meaning some people modify their rides to be unsafe.

Yes I admit I am a gear head. And I love cars and any form of motorsports. But when I drive, I try not to get too comfortable. When I'm at a point where I feel too comfortable, I get complacent. Which is why I like driving with a manual. I'm always doing something with my hands and feet to work the car.

What makes for a good driver is preparation and common sense. Knowing the road and weather conditions, the state of maintenance the vehicle that you are driving is in. As far as common sense. If you're going faster than all the other cars around you, slow down. If someone is riding your bumper, slow down and let them pass. If your phone rings and you have to answer, Pull off to a safe spot and then answer. If it's a text, that can wait.

In the US, having a license is a privilege. Depending on how you are driving when a cop pulls you over, they nearly always have the right to confiscate your license if they view you as a liability or hazard behind the steering wheel. Reason being is to revoke your driving privileges until time sees fit to return it to you, such as returning it back prior to a court date if you have no other form of transportation to said court. Saying it's your right to drive and have a driver license will in no way protect you from being detained, arrested, etc. or your license from being confiscated as it is in fact a privilege, not a right, to drive within the states. People can argue otherwise, but keep in mind that EVERY person that gets behind the steering wheel of a vehicle is now guiding a device that is capable of killing multiple people, just as a gun can, so cops are merely looking out for the well being of the driver and everyone around the driver.

Same. I tried to ask my instuctor to "extend" the time I drove when he filled out the log book, but he got pissed and said no. Lol
