A 14-year-old Hiruzen walks the streets of Konohagakure by himself, heading towards the Hokage Mansion. As he leisurely walks, he thinks back to when his deceased father, Sasuke Sarutobi, told him that he has great potential to one day achieve the title of "Hokage".

Hiruzen: (Dad, did you really believe that I have what it takes to lead the village?)

Hiruzen looks up at the Hokage Monument, staring into the single, giant stone face of the Hokage, Hashirama Senju.

Hiruzen: (Hashirama-sama, I'll surpass you and become a fine Hokage. Not for myself, but for my dad and all of these villagers who are like family to me! No doubt about it!)

The promising prodigy arrives at the mansion. Two Akimichi shinobi guard the entrance, but allow Hiruzen right through, being that he regurlarly visits the Hokage.

Hiruzen enters the Hokage's office and is disappointed to see Hashirama overwhelmed by a mountain of scrolls, all of which needs to be reviewed and signed.

Hashirama: Greetings, young Sarutobi. How's your morning been so far?

Hiruzen:...Fine, I guess.

The legendary Wood Release user studies Hiruzen's face.

Hashirama: Your face tells me otherwise.

Hashirama puts down his writing brush in order to give Hiruzen his full attention.

Hashirama: Now, tell me, what's bothering you?

Hiruzen: There's no fooling you, Hashirama-sama. Well, I was thinking earlier how I much stronger I can be. Tobirama-sensei has been too busy with his jutsu experimentation to train me recently. Danzo, Kagami, and the others are soon to pass me up. How can I hope to be sitting where you are one day if I can't even manage to stay ahead of my peers?

Hashirama: I see. Hiruzen-boy, you've got more potential than you can fathom. Strength alone is not what you're required to possess to become the Hokage. The only thing that's necessary is an overwhelming Will of Fire. However, if the only way I can get you to begin believing in yourself more is to help you develop your abilities, then so be it.

Hashirama rises from his seat. He then creates a Wood Release clone that will continue his deskwork.

Hashirama: Follow me.

Hiruzen: Really!? You're the best, Hashirama-sama! Please don't tell Tobirama-sensei I told you that.

Hashirama laughs his larger-than-life laugh.

The living legend leads Hiruzen all the way to a large open field just a few miles west of the village. The surrounding forest—every single tree—was created by Hashirama himself.

Hashirama leaps to the northern edge of the field, leaving Hiruzen at the southern edge. Then, Hashirama turns around to face Hiruzen.

Hashirama: Prepare yourself, young one. I won't be holding back much. Being the extraordinary Sarutobi that he was, your father reached his prime at around your age and stayed there until his death at age thirty-six. So, I've no doubt that you're at your prime or near it at this very moment. You have your Sarutobi blood to thank for that, but your sheer determination is even more responsible for your impressive talent.

Hiruzen: I've never been more ready in my life, Hashirama-sama. Here I come!

Hiruzen charges Hashirama.
