DBZ is good. Don't overhype yourself going in. Just enjoy it.

^ Naruto will never reach the status of DBZ. DBZ had the right timing and the right market to make it what it is. It is popular because of that. Then again One Direction is popular so maybe popularity is not the best way to judge a show.

To the OP:
I'm pretty sure almost everyone in this thread has not even read Dragonball. When people debate about DBZ they always use anime clips to back up with they say, never anything from the manga. The anime severely overhypes the characters and what they can do. If you just watch the anime, keep that in mind.

Now which to watch/read. There is a problem with both imo. The anime and it overhyping characters, and the manga with barely any dialog. In the manga you will get like 5 pages in a row with just them standing around, then charging at each other, then a few pictures of them in different poses hitting each other. The manga is really fast to read because of this. The anime tends to drag things out a lot. The original at least. They remade it and cut out a lot of filler, but their voices.....and that music......it just isn't the same. Since you have not watched the original maybe you will think DBZ Ki is better.

Also, it should be mentioned that Dragon Ball is broken up like how Naruto is. The manga for both are the names I just said but after a time skip, the names change in the anime. Naruto Shippuden for Naruto and Dragon Ball Z for Dragon Ball. This also brings up another point. Most people have only watched DBZ, not the first part. Imo the first part is much better. Dragon Ball is 153 episodes long and DBZ/DBZ Ki is 291/277 episodes long respectively. It is a lot of watching to do. I would recommend watching both despite how long they are. If you don't have the time just read it. Just know the manga is not as epic as the anime. Much is changed to make it that way.

I have read Dragonball and watched all of the anime even the god awful GT. I really like Dragonball I think you are right for the most part especially about the first part being the better of the 2 at least as far as story goes. But if your more into the fighting and epic transformations then DBZ is the best one although really they are the same series. Also Kai is only like 98 episodes right now to the end of the Cell Saga. I think they are planning on doing the Buu saga in kai as well although it isn't going to air in Japan which is kind of weird. It's going to be for Korea, Taiwan, and China which is fine becasue that means they will release it here as well. I kind of wished they would do the same for first part as well having all of the filler cut out makes it alot easier to rewatch..

I had forgotten that they haven't completed the Buu saga yet for Kai. I had just looked up how many episodes it stated on the wiki list. Maybe it wasn't Kai I was looking at. I haven't been keeping up with the DB franchise, mainly because it is not my favorite anime anymore. When I was little though, I would watch the hell out of it and even had episodes recorded on VHS. It was the greatest thing in the world. Then you get older and tastes tend to change. I think people getting into DBZ and stuff would like DBZ Kai more then the original. Although you can get use to voice actors over a long period of time. I had watched a couple of episodes of Kai and I didn't like it because I prefer the original voice actors more. People that start with Kai will probably like them more then the original. I also prefer the original music more also, but some of the Kai music was cool. I definitively has potential to be liked if it is the first series to watch.
