Do you like Drake or no?

Honestly I just heard one of his songs and it still baffles me how he's popular. Can someone explain to me why he gets so much attention?

I was just listening to some speed battles by Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Twista, etc and they would eat him alive.
Never liked doubletime rappers, just doesn't sound good imo.

I don't really like drake either but I can see how he is popular. He gets huge promotion and radio spins thats why. The lables make him popular.

Hes popular cuz he sings and raps fulltime, and while he isn't the best he's good at both.
An example being the fact that the summer banger is Hotline bling(singing), but he bodied meek mill with Back to Back(rapping)
He isn't the best pop singer out(Chris brown) he isnt the best mainstream rapper out(kendrick Lamar) but because he does both well he sits comfy at the top of the commercial rap game. And there really isnt an argument there.

I like him.

I like his hits. It's good vining music, but his style gets boring. The bangers you can bump in the car with the boys and parties keeps him around.

I'm late but I listen to him because unlike a lot of other rappers he doesn't pretend to be hood or anything he makes songs where he points I'm not hard so I'm not just gonna act like I am . he shows that men can be more vulnerable than women sometime . he's one of my favorite artist . he gets most of his hype because most of his fan base are women . his music is about love , love being lost , being taken for granted, being sucessful and being betrayed. But I'm not here to judge you . everybody is free to like what they want

Nah he's too corny for me. Nothing he does is exceptional. Everything he does is simply mediocre or good.

I do like trophies though.

Lol. Are you one of those backpackers that thinks fast rapping makes a rapper good?

Those people could beat him in a battle...but they can't make better music than him...and that's where a lot of Drake's appeal comes from...he can rap but he's also mastered what's just as important...the music. Nobody wants to hear a discog full of a horrorcore rapper spitting about how lyrical he is and how he'll do a bunch of foul shit. That's unimpressive and not hard to do. Not everyone can do what Drake does.

Em can rap his ass off but he couldn't make a dope hip hop album in 2015 to save his life.

You could argue the same for Drake, because one could easily say his music is too pop esque...but Em hasn't been doing well in the artistry of the shit to begin with as of recent.

And just like Em can eat Drake in a battle, Em could get eaten up in a battle by a Loaded Lux or a Murda Mook....but that's what they do...can they make a classic album? Probably not.

There's a shit ton of good rappers and not enough good artists...so there's not much special about being able to spit quick multis and throw in some witty wordplay here and there...thousands of other rappers are doing the same thing without the ability to make a decent record.

If battling and rapping well is what you care about... URL, KOTD, and all those leagues are there for you.

I can easily explain why.

1. He's popular because he writes songs with catchy hooks and has a definitive songwriting style. They usually have unique titles and expression. Like 0 to 100, The Motto, Hotling Bling, Worst Behavior, etc. Songs that have unique titles and repetitive hooks are easy to remember not to mention more appealing. You see a unique name for a song and wonder what it's about.

2. He merged Hip-hop and R&B in a new way. Instead of the faster tempo, 6/8 type time of most hip hop songs before him. 40 or whoever thought of keeping the time, slowing the tempo, adding a special accent to the beat and also creating more spacious beats. With a more avant garde , also atmospheric chords in the back and creepy melodies used catchy(learned from lil Wayne you can tell). So basically musically, they made hip hop more R&B ish.

3. More on the merging of Hip-hop and R&B, Drake took the "blues" out of Rhythm and Blues(R&B) and applied it to his lyrics. Drake was literally the first successful emotional rapper, the singing helps sort of but he's not that great. It's the lyrical content with the mix that enhances that R&B feel. After that everyone started singing, even people that are better singers and rappers like Gambino.

4. Because of his emotional lyrics and reminiscence of R&B, he attracted a huge female fan base. Which is the most important aspect of mainstream success. Female fans are the most supportive, it's just how it is. Think of all the biggest mainstream artists, Taylor Switft, Justin Beiber, Drake, One Direction. They're huge largely in part to their appeal to females and their female audience.

I don't mind him honestly. I do just hate that he is only making music for money though, when at his position he could do extrodinary things for mainstream music. Especially since that's the first music the majority of the public are introduced too in life.

I think you got a little too excited just because I mentioned that's who I was listening to earlier before Drake. IMO content is even more important than speed and that's why I listen to Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jay Z (old school), Tupac, Wu-Tang, etc. Either way, when compared with speed or content Drake loses at both IMO.

That's what I'm getting at by saying "content" and I agree. Thank you for posting.
