Also: Apple Removes Civil War Games Containing Confederate Flag

Amid a nation wide debate over the Confederate flag, Apple has removed civil war games containing the image, following Amazon and Walmart who have banned products baring the flag from being sold.

Both Ultimate General: Gettysburg and all the Hunted Cow were noticeably missing from the App Store, but the news doesn't come as a surprise to those who read Tim Cook's tweets following the recent South Carolina shooting. The Apple CEO wrote that the victims needed to be honored by "eradicating racism & removing the symbols & words that feed it."

A rep for Apple spoke to Tech Crunch about their decision, revealing, "We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses."

Following Apple's statement, Andrew from HexWar Games spoke to Touch Arcade and insisted, "We're in no way sympathetic to the use of the flag in an offensive way, we used it purely because historically that was the flag that was used at the time."

Touch Arcade also added that sources close to Apple say that they are working with developers affected by the ban to help them remove or replace the Confederate flag.

How to you feel about Apple's decision?

So what? Now we're just going to try and whitewash it from the pages of history? This is ludicrous, banning it's flying over state buildings is one thing, you wouldn't fly a USSR flag over the state capitol why would you fly a CSA flag, but banning it's depiction at all? Historical references like movies and games now have to either go back and edit/remove the symbol or avoid it all together and for what? Just because people can't understand that not every display of the symbol is equal to racism?

As I've stated in another thread, I'm neutral about the Confederate flag as both positions are on shaky grounds, and both can easily be torn apart, so I choose not to pick a side when both are on shaky grounds.

However, banning games is insane. The guy makes it sound like only the racial ones are taken off, but TotalBiscuit has noted that strategy games with the flag have been taken down.

Thankfully, all of us hateful racists can still buy swastikas and nazi paraphernalia from the Apple store, Amazon, and even Walmart.

Turning off the sarcasm for a moment (although, yes, those items are still available)...

This man is simply a race-baiting hack. Always has been, always will be. Useless trash who couldn't get anyone to listen to him until he started harping about racism.

This does not, at all, contradict my point.

The fact that a hateful individual such as yourself happens to know a bunch of other people who listen to this racist in order to fuel their hatred for things they don't understand simply reinforces my original point.

From before you were born:

"The Confederate flag is not a symbol of racism anymore than the U.S. flag is a symbol of racism. Racist groups display both flags, yet we are intelligent enough to see that the flag of the United States is not racist while we easily conclude the Confederate flag is racist. I object to this slander against a great national treasure -- the Confederate flag.

There are many people who simply feel the Civil War was about slavery and that therefore the Confederate battle flag is a symbol of that racist position. History proves that point false. While the Southern states did practice slavery, the war was not directly about the continuation of that institution. Most Southern soldiers did not own slaves. The ample records of the soldiers of all ranks -- privates to generals -- shows these brave men fighting for their rights, not slavery. My ancestors are among those brave Southern men.I applaud the state of South Carolina and those other faithful Southern states that continue to display this great flag. It is proper for these states to honor the brave Southern soldiers of the War of Northern Aggression. It is folly to rewrite history to falsely conclude that the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism.

I hope South Carolina and the other Southern states continue to let this hallowed flag fly freely over their state capitols. I hope the editors of the Deseret News do not try to rewrite history to falsely malign the honor and integrity of the Southern soldiers -- of all races -- who bravely fought for their rights and freedoms. The Confederate flag is the Southern symbol of honor. Let's offer respect for it.

Gordon Allen

Highland"

"When speaking of the country as a whole in 1860 it was grammatically normal to say, “the United States are…” rather than “the United States is…” No southern state that entered into the Union would have done so if it didn’t believe it could withdraw.

When Robert E. Lee declared, “I cannot raise my sword against my country”, he was speaking of Virginia – not the United States. The Confederacy was formed to protect common interests of the southern states from intrusive forces – much the same as the United States of America was established in 1776 to protect its common interests.

When the Civil War erupted in 1861, only one southerner in 20 was a slaveholder. The enormous plantations one sees in Gone with the Wind were rare. Most southerners were small, independent farmers, not unlike their northern neighbours.

In fact, there was great resentment among southern troops when owners of three or more slaves were exempted from military duty. Moreover, there were some Union states that permitted slavery.

It’s no coincidence that Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in areas that were in rebellion against the United States.

Soldiers in the Union army fought for abstract causes. The average Confederate soldier was more practical. He was not fighting for slavery or states’ rights. He was defending his state from an invading army.

A 2010 scholarly treatise by historian Michael Perman emphasizes that Confederate soldiers were driven by non-political reasons to fight, such as the defence of one’s home and family."

There was nothing racist about the Southern Cross - or the Confederate Battle Flag.

It is not comparable to the Swastika by any stretch of the imagination.

This man is simply a racist hack who would have no career if he wasn't busy getting you indoctrinated lot riled up and ready to burn down more quick trips. He's a mouthpiece for the politics of hopelessness and is a blight upon sentient beings.
