This will accurately tell you all how each Doujutsu relates to one another and their history. First let's begin with the Doujutsu's themselves and their abilities:
Now that we know the doujutsu abilities let's begin with the history and relation to one another.
The Predecessor to all doujutsu was the 9 tomoed juubi Sharingan. Unlike popular belief my theory is the juubi doesn't even have rinnegan and the rings around the eye are just links to hold each level of full tomoe. Each tomoe is comprised of the power and ability the juubi holds.
The Sage of six paths, like many theories have suggested, was born from hyuuga and uzumaki lineage. He was the first of his kind. His uzumaki blood strengthened the byakugan and gave it unpresedented insight and power. His eye was pure and devoid of any corruption, unlike the scorned juubi who was angry at humans for destroying and ruining the world it created and loved. The sage was able to see chakra with his byakugan and was the strongest of his generation so he was well respected. It was at this time he taught the basics of chakra and ninjutsu.
After perfecting his sealing techniques and enchanting his 7 weapons he faced off against the juubi and sealed it inside himself. This gave him unrivaled strength and the juubi's Sharingan overlapped his byakugan. Soon he mastered yin/yang and suppressed the juubis overwhelming yin influence thus evening out the eyes making the red color and tomoe disappear. Thus was born what came to be known as the rinnegan.
As the sage grew older he realized he had yet to bring forth offspring so he used creation of all things and gave his two children even abilities.
Realizing he made a mistake and failed when he spread ninjutsu thus causing wars and death he intrusted his younger son with his legacy because he sought his ideals and recognized the faults of the elder son's. Then the sage died.
Over time the seal on the elder son's descendant's eyes disappeared and a few hyuugas were possessed by the juubi's influence , which gave them sharingan, becoming uchiha after they defected from the hyuuga clan, whom retained the original byakugan. The younger son's descendants became reliant on the juubi yang to grow in power thus becoming senju after they broke away from the original uzumaki clan, who remained pure from the juubi influence.

The sage realized the juubi's influence may be too much on his son so he put an uzumaki seal on his eyes to ensure they didn't become the sharingan thus sprouting hatred in his heart. The elder son's role was to spread knowledge of ninjutsu and its powers across the land like his father did

Was blessed with the sage's strength vitality and life force of his uzumaki fathers blood. He also possessed the juubis yang chakra giving him the ability of mokutan as well as sage mode. His job was to spread peace and love across the land like his father hoped to achieve in his lifetime.
