Earth Release(Doton) is one of the basic elemental nature transformation techniques and allows the user to manipulate the surrounding earth for offensive and defensive purposes or create it; be it dirt, mud, or rock.
Earth Release techniques have the ability to change the strength and composition of the earth from being as hardas metal to as soft as clay,as well as manipulating their density, making them heavier or lighter.This includes allowing the user to travel through ground and rock in various ways which can be essential for both transportation and for setting up attacks or creating defences or for offence. This makes earth techniques one of the most versatile of the elemental techniques. Pre-existing earth is not necessary though, for the user can create it with their own chakra.Earth Release affinities are the most common amongst the ninja of Iwagakure, and is commonly affiliated with the Snake seal and/or slamming their palm onto the ground.
Earth is strong against water because earth naturally contains water or absorbs water to the point when it becomes muddy then dries up but weak against lightning because it can easily travel through and break the ground apart.
Earth Release was shown being used inconjunction with Fire Release.
It seems that Explosion Release chakra can be infused into clay using the the Iwagakure Kinjutsu to form explosive clay. This clay is earth-based, and is weak to Lightning Release.

Doton, meaning Earth Release, is one of the basic 5 nature transformation techs and allows the user to manipulate the surrounding Earth and use it to their benefit. The entire structure of terrains can be changed within seconds. It is a very sturdy element, which can endure the harshest weather conditions. The user can change the structure of the Earth, either he can make it super hard or as soft as clay as well as manipulating their density, making them heavier or lighter. It is one of most versatile elements among the basic 5.
Weaknesses
- Weak against Lightning, as Lightning easily cuts through Earth.
- Strong against water, because Earth easily absorbs water.
Concept In Battle
Well, Earth Release is a pretty great element to use in battle. Most of its uses are for defense as Doton jutsus make excellent defenses. It's great for catching opponents off guard too. They're mainly offensively used in combos. Also, they can be used as an armor surrounding the hand which increases the punching power of the user. Also, users like Oonoki can lighten or make things heavier, as seen when Oonoki lightened Madara's super giant Meteor.

Earth Versatility
Earth is also very versatile like water, it can be shaped into many things and has ALOT of Jutsu just like water because of how many possibilities the Element earth has in manipulation. It can create simple ninja tools or then simple structures in the shape of what ever the user wants, dragons, dog walls or other cool things. Though I wouldn't know any of this cause I copied and pasted it all from someone elses training session.

Raido sits on the rock while in the meditative position ,flowing his chakra into the rock, having flowed a large amount of chakra into the rock,i noticed,i somehow know the shape of the rock and the edges without looking ,i start feeling the strength,agility and the rock's endurance, feeling this things, i start feeling myself having this characteristics

For now, since you have meditated and found your Earth chakra, get off the rock and come next to me. Afterwards place your palms onto the floor and begin by sending your Earth chakra into it, by changing the structure of the Earth, forcefully cause two pillars to erupt out of the ground with your palms on top of each one respectfully.

Hearing his sensei's words,Raido simply walks next to him and places his palms on the ground concentrating a large amount of chakra into his hands, he starts thinking of the feel of earth beneath him subconsciously turning it into doton chakra which he then flows into the ground forcefully changing the shape of the earth and causing it to emerge out of the ground to form two earth pillars with my palms on both
*Crouches down and analyses the pillars* Hummm, they appear to look good on the outside, let's see then...
*Touches one pillar, where upon it breaks apart forming rubble that spreads across the ground*

Hearing his sensei's words and the sound of the crumbling pillar,Raido could his heartbeat increasing as he didn't want to disappoint his sensei any longer ,Raido attempts the jutsu again, by placing his palms on the ground concentrating a large amount of chakra into his hands,again he starts thinking of the feel of earth beneath him as this calms his increasing eath beat subconsciously turning it into doton chakra which he then flows into the ground forcefully changing the shape of the earth and compressing a large amount of earth into a smaller potion with greater density, strength and weight after which i while still concentrating manipulate the dense earth to emerge out of the ground to form two earth pillars from under both my palms

What I did right there, is basic manipulation of the texture of the Earth. You see, by supplying more chakra into the pillar, you are able to even change its form, its shape, all based upon your will. You can even change the weight, but that requires a jutsu we will go through later on. Right now, I want you to copy what I just did. Supply some more chakra into the Earth pillars you just created, and in doing so, soften the Earths structure, almost so that it's like a jelly. Then, by using basic shape manipulation, change the shapes of your pillars. Forming the one in your right hand into a sword, and the one in your left hand into a shield. Describe how you do each one individually, for example the large surface area that a shield has, and the sharp edge a sword has.

Hearing his sensei's speak, Raido couldnt help but smile due to the happiness he was experiencing with the determination,he starts by placing his palms on the ground concentrating a large amount of chakra into his hands,again he starts thinking of the feel of earthbeneath him as this calms his increasing eath beat subconsciously turning it into doton chakra which he then flows into the ground forcefully changing the shape of the earth and compressing a large amount of earth into a smaller potion with greater density, strength andweight after which i while still concentrating manipulate the dense earth to emerge out of the ground to form two earth pillars from under both my palms after which with i start shape manipulating with my imagination, i mould the earth pillar to my right into the exact replica of the sword on my back by carving out through the use of my chakra inside the pillar the slightly broad handle and the thin and sharp blade itself,as i do that the earth surrounding the sword crumbles leaving the sword standing as i hold it with my right hand,I continue my shape manipulating the earth pillar by making the earth as soft as clay and carve out a shield from it highlighting the flat,broad and denser part of the shield after which i return the shield to its normal state,giving it the strength

What we did here is merely just a fragment of the Earth's manipulation, this is an extremely versatile jutsu because it allows so many actions to occur. You can use this as shields, you can make weapons just like we did, you can use the pillar itself to hurl the opponent in the air, or even strike onto him. Always remember what I told you, the Earth is your friend, but enough about that, since I will test you later on.
For now, we will skip the next jutsu according to the list, since it is part of a combo that involves a C-rank, and we will go back to it later. For now, I want you to re-perform what you just did, however to a greater extent. *Throws you a rock* Catch it, and send your Earth chakra into it. What you did with the pillars was to make them smaller, take chunks off in order to fulfill the shapes you wanted, but this time it will be harder. I want you to change the shape of the rock into that of a staff, it must be long and not-so thick, with a spear at the tip, make sure to keep the staff's form, do not let it crumble away as you stretch the thick rock.
*Raises an Earth pillar with a dot in the middle facing you a few meters away* And once you're done with making the spear, using careful timing and precise accuracy, strike the dot in the middle of the pillar with your spear.
Well done, you just learnt your first Doton jutsu!

Hearing his sensei's words Raido was so happy he is learning his first jutsu, grabbing the rock,he takes a very deep breathe ,he starts by forming a fist around the rock concentrating a large amount of chakra which should be sufficient for the jutsu into his hand,again he starts thinking of the feel of earth beneath his legs,thinking about the sword and shield he created, giving him the determination and mental strength,he calms himself to the point at which he starts hearing his own heart beat subconsciously turning it into doton chakra which he then flows into the rock using his chakra to compress it forcing it into a long rod while manipulating the rod into a more straight rod manipulating a pointed edge to extend from the rod,seeing the created rod, i using my knowledge of projectile, i throw the spear hitting the point and piercing deep into the pillar

In doing so, cause two gigantic walls of rock to raise around your opponent. The walls are reflected of each other, meaning they can either be formed to your opponent's front and back, or both sides. And once done doing that, use your chakra to cause the wall to come together, and your opponent will be caught in that movement, being crushed.
*Summons a clone that begins running into many directions, changing them in quick manners*
The real killer in this jutsu, is being able to time your movement, and make sure when to exactly raise the Earth, since my clone is running around, you have to time yourself to exactly catch him off guard. This can be done by manipulating small forms of rock, just like you are supposed to do with the two ''big'' walls, raise some small walls that will just make his feet stumble, unbalancing him where the main attack will come into place.

Hearing his sensei's words and knowing he has learned all D rank,Raido was so happy he is learning his first C jutsu,seeing his sensei's clone running around ,he takes a very deep breathe, making sure to be so quiet,i close my eyes,concentrating on my legs,making me hear vibrations of the ground as the clone moves and his heartbeat concentrating a large amount of chakra which should be sufficient for the jutsu into his legs,again he starts thinking of the feel of earth beneath his legs,thinking about the spear he made,giving him more determination and mental strength,he calms himself turning his chakra into doton chakra and releases,as the clone was moving, he simply felt the vibrations getting louder meaning the clone was going faster, immediately i manipulate the earth in front of the clone forming 2 pillars like i did before few centimeters in front of the clone making the clone lose balance and impossible to change direction , both to the right and left,as the clone's first leg gets into the range of the pillars, i simply command the pillars to smash,
Due to the clone being faster than the pillars, The whole body will be in-between at the point of contact, smashing the clone making it revert to dust
