It has it's Ups & Downs but nobody should Skip Cannon arcs:p

What makes One Piece so good is that Oda actually foreshadows, Character Development (Usopp! As well as others) it isn't power up after power up. I remember Boa commenting a while back about unnecessary Power ups in manga when the repertoire that they already have was good enough to begin with and I agree. Although gear second and Asura weren't explained very well to me. Also that the progression of the story makes sense! I'm talking about it not being a random strong guy comes along for no apparent reason but to fight and destroy us every arc. In One Piece it's a journey where the opponents are stronger for logical reasons and appropriate places and are encountered through believable circumstances. As well as that Luffy's crew aren't stuck up his ass hiding behind him because their to weak to protect themselves yes their not as strong as him but strong within their own rights and are essential for one reason or another. What I see failed with Naruto is that Kishi neglected the other characters of Konoha and focused more on making Naruto a powerhouse leaving everyone behind. It's also kind of the same thing with Bleach yeah Chad, Orihime and Iryuu train and when you think their catching up to just be a few steps behind Ichigo something happens to make them look like little bitches. I'm not saying they have to be as strong as the Protagonist but they should be more then cheerleaders that say "I tried now you take over" Zoro standing up to protect Luffy and bearing the burden in Thriller Bark rocked my emotions to the core. Even Fairy Tail has similarities to these two and the "Friendship overcomes dramatic power differences" wtf is that.

I may be criticizing those manga but I still find them entertaining but so far in my manga exploration I still consider One Piece to be at the top story wise. It's beautifully put together and I'd say if Oda had good romance somehow in it then it'd be perfect but it doesn't need it because it's still freaking awesome how it is! I am currently looking for a manga with a freaking sick storyline though

Davy Back Fight arc was a huge part of the character development. Luffy or the Strawhat crew hadn't faced these kinds of things earlier.
Like when Foxy stole that horse and challenged them to davy back fight, normally Luffy and the rest of the crew would just beat the living crap out of the Foxy pirates and get the horse back by force. But since the Davy Back Fight was a traditional Pirate game, then Luffy chose to honor that tradition and put the rest of his crewmates and himself at risk of losing everything(pride, honor and stuff).

In the end, Luffy did whatever it took to get his crewmates and the horse back, while still following the rules of the Davy Back.
It also shows how much of a genius Luffy is when it comes to battle, and the rest of the strawhats too. Every event was set up so that the Foxy pirates would win, but even through that, Straw Hats still won. And in the last fight too, Luffy was at a complete disadvantage, because the whole ship was set up with traps for him, but he still figured a way to beat Foxy.

In depth, its a really good arc.

I knew that the Davy Back Fight arc was foreshadowing the Ennis Lobby arc, and I know that it was showing us how determined Luffy was to save his friends, but I just could not stand Foxy as a character. So I'll admit it, I skipped the most of the arc. I stopped at the start of the first event, and picked it up again at Luffy vs Foxy. The only thing that arc did was foreshadow the Ennis Lobby arc and introduce us to Admiral Aokiji. At least the Jaya arc (another arc I really hated but still read through it) introduced us to Fleet Admiral Sengoku, introduced us to Kuma and Doflamingo, and introduced us to Blackbeard and his crew. Also Doflamingo eventually finished off that shitty villain Bellamy

I know it's not his style, but it would have been better IMO if Oda had Aokiji slaughter Foxy and his entire crew to show the scale of his power. Foxy and his crew just didn't seem to have any other relevance in the story (except as recurring filler characters), especially since Oda hasn't shown them again. So I doubt they'll ever be coming back in the manga

I'm currently at skypiea at episode 17x so can I skip skypiea? I already know that Luffy owns Eneru at the final fight and they introduced "haki" so yea. :/

Cuz I already know most of the stuff of Skypiea but I kinda dont know the purpose of hitting the bell. It's only 20 ep. still I finish the arc but I find it kinda boring ( maybe the pacing of the anime but I wont read the manga cuz I usually get caught up with a series from the anime and start reading the manga)

I'm just really looking forward to the introduction of aokiji nd CP9

Actually the starting is hard to get into X_X. I was bored in the starting.. But I got into one piece watching the whitebeard arc scene.. So I had to bare with starting because it was slow.. And i can say it not and will say it when I need to.. out of the big 3 One piece has the most boring starting. there. Its not a big deal to say that it gets good from a specific point because its true for some people.

Oda did a great job at Davy Back. For once, Luffy submitted to a set of rules and played under the villain's wiles. It shows that Luffy knows respect, and shows it even to opposing people. We also see hints of teamwork, and that Oda can pull a standalone arc with not much combat very well.

We also see a villain who is somewhat comedic, but is wily and smart as well. They've survived the Grand Line because of their brains, unlike Luffy who's only survived because of his own brute strength and the help of other people. Foxy has none of that, and it's quite impressive.

Haki was never introduced at Skypeia.

I actually wonder why people try to get into One Piece because of fighting and action, when the whole premise of the series is adventure. If you're bored watching some arcs, then One Piece is not for you, and I mean that seriously. There is a reason why you don't skip arcs, because the whole story will be nothing if you do. You won't appreciate revelations more, if they tie in with elements from past arcs.
