"Madara needed Kuuybi" so what? Do you think that Hasharama had his SM since forever?
How many times did Madara say that Hashirama is the only one who can stop him?
Ever since Madara left Konoha Hashirama needed a power up so he probably trained his SM just like Naruto in case if Madara try to attack Konoha which he did.

Kuuybi is his powerup and someone told Hashirama about SM which made them equal in their last battle.

Though Madara seems to be a bit superior with PS on his side.

I think people are forgetting that hashirama still had his dragon,wooden human technique, and the buddah to defeat Perfect susanoo with kyuubi. That's two summoning versus three, totally out numbered in terms of justus but still lost rather easily.
